Resignation letter question!

So I'm actively looking for another job, because my current one bites warthog genitalia. I have a brief resignation note ready to go, but I am not sure how to word the date I am quitting.

For example, if i were to say "my resignation will be effective February 13" would this mean Feb. 13 would be my last day of employment, OR the first day that I am not employed with my current company?

I wouldn't have any issue with "resignation effective immediately" in case I get a job offer and they want me to start right away... the way things are going at my current job, I'm ready to walk out with little to no notice.

When I did mine, I just told them the last day I would work for them, which was a Saturday, since our work week ended on that day of the week. The way you say it sounds like the 13th will be your last day.

First, what type of job is it? If you're doing part-time work, usually a quick "Boss, just to let you know, I found another job, my last day is..." given at the end of a shift is fine. More than some of them get. But if you want to do the letter thing...

Reword it so that it's clear. Try "My last day will be February 13" instead. Or "My last day will be no later than February 13", if you want to remind him that you working anything beyond Right Now depends on how he treats you.

Generally I recommend against that, unless the company tries to take advantage of you. I had a coworker who did that recently, then realized that he needed a job... but the DM wasn't going to talk to him, even though they have a fairly long history together, going back to when the DM was working as a store manager and hired him (couldn't even if he wasn't irritated with the guy walking out on the job, because the RM knows about it, too.)

On the other hand, don't get guilted into doing extra work you're not interested in, or having them pile you with responsibilities. And if they say "if you don't do this, we're not giving you a good recommendation", well, you need to be rested and refreshed for your new employment, right?

It really depends on how serious the job is.

The general rule as far as notice goes is 1 week if your paid each week,2 weeks if your paid twice a month, 4 weeks if your management or salaried or get on well with your boss.

If you dont want to burn your bridges you might want to include "Thank you for the opportunity of working here..."

Most of my final notices have been worded short and sweet something like. Thank you for letting me work here, however I have found/am currently looking for a new job. This is my written notice of resignation, my last day of work with your company will be Friday 13th 2040.

Thats all you technically need, for bosses who have meant more to me I have included more but you dont have to.

You don't need to go into great detail about why you are leaving, unless you have a good respect for the company/management and want them to know that you are leaving due to moving, need more money that they obviously can't pay, or to reinforce that its not because of them. The resignation letter can act like an exit interview if needed (basically telling HR that you are leaving so you can get off the soup lines).

Warm thanks for the suggestions guys! I've worked for Office Depot for about 7 1/2 years, and have recently been moved up to full-time. I am crosstrained in cashiering, stocking, furniture sales, some accounting... and I still only make just less than $10 an hour. And my commute is 20 miles (about 32km ) each way. [I had to move to another town. Commute used to be 10 minutes on foot lol] These are really my main reasons for leaving: I feel that I don't make enough money to justify how far I drive and for everything I do there.

I am on good terms with all of my coworkers except one AM that a lot of people have a problem with. I really don't have a lot in the way of true Suckoid customers, hence my rare posting here.

I know as soon as I drop the bomb, someone will play the transfer card..... that I can just transfer to a store closer to where I live. The issue there is that I would still be putting up with the assmonkey of a DM and all the garbage corporate throws our way.

Sigh. The joys of retail. Never gonna be paid what I'm worth, so it's time to go.

Have you discussed your deserving a pay raise with anyone-particularly a manager that notices how much you are actually trained to do? I realize I'm probably asking something you did long ago, but I just want to be sure that if you like the job as much as you say you do, that you're not leaving for something that can be negotiated. I'm sure your company wouldn't want to let a valuable employee such as yourself go, especially with the work they've put into having you trained in so much. You do have some leverage here...

The only reason a company asks for a resignation letter is to prove to unemployment (if you try for it later) that you quit and weren't fired. It is considered professional to give one, but it really isn't necessary.

My store has a "voluntary separation" form that they prefer that you fill out as your written notice, although in the past (quitting to go away to school) I've written my own resignation letter. It is, however, not uncommon for people to quit over the phone with no notice.

Anyway, here is how it reads:

Dear [Store manager],

Please accept this notice as my official resignation. My last day of employment will be Monday, February 20, 2007.

My decision is based upon career considerations and is not intended to reflect adversely upon Office Depot. I wish everyone at Office Depot the best in all their future endeavors.

The date is for real since I got a job offer this afternoon, but it was a 'take it or leave it' opportunity. So looks like I asked for help just in time, and I was rewarded with all your suggestions. I start my new job Tuesday! Thanks again for all your responses. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.
