    Got to see a couple of them close-up

    I don't know what to call them--geeks, nerds, super-nerds (as my coworker suggested)? I had a shy, akward guy in my line buying some kind of computer something (I don't know; there's a reason I don't work in electronics). He was pretty non-communicative, though not rude. He seemed shy, especially when he slid his card upside down. A minute or two later his friend walked up and he caught him and they were talking while I rang friend up, who handed me the money instead of his soda--facepalm--and suddenly first guy was soooo outgoing and talking fast and excited-like. I heard words I recognized from this board, like "mage" and "sorcerer". Ah, geeks in the wild LOL. I was very quiet, lest I startle them. They were adorable.

      We call ourselves geeks.

      We're typically (not always) introverted, shy, have difficulty communicating with more 'normal' people.

      I actually have a t-shirt which says 'normal people scare me'. When I'm using one of my mobility aids, people assume I mean 'able-bodied'. I enjoy the ambiguity.

      Oh: and if you met me outside this board, you probably wouldn't recognise me. My speaking style is nowhere near as fluent as my writing style!

          I'm one of those occasional geeks that's loud by nature. There are aspects of my personalities that are toned down in real life vs online. But I'm loud all the time. And I've noticed lately that I tend to post here and on Facebook like I speak.

                I've done the same thing in stores: in a bit of a daze (although I'm a bit more friendly than your average nerd), and when one of my friends come up, I start yattering at them about what I was thinking, usually a spell or a charm or a character concept...

                Yeah... the nerd/geek culture is a bit of a different beast nowadays, especially with the rise of the computer. Well... because of the rise of the computer.

                          It really cracks me up that stuff that got me teased in grade school is suddenly cool. Like Pokemon. I was never as into it as my brother, but I played the card game and watched the show on occasion. I kept it quiet because I would have been teased mercilessly. But now everyone loves Pokemon. Just wander into any Hot Topic and see how much Pokemon stuff there is.

                            I was uncool before uncool was cool Someone dubbed me "turbo-nerd" although I can't remember who at this point.

                            I recently got back into Pokemon after having put the games down for about 15 years (yes, I have a pokewalker--it's kinda neat meeting young kids who are surprised that someone my age not only knows what one is but can debate the merits of various characters).
