The umbrella stand just might be the most important part of a patio set, and here's how I know:

During the past two weeks we've been getting in our patio furniture (shudder) for the upcoming Spring season, and we've already begun to assemble and set it.

For some sets we had all the pieces-table, chairs, and unbrella-except for the umbrella stands. So the seasonal specialist's solution was to assemble everything and put it all out, without the umbrella stand. So the tables would have umbrellas stuck in them but nothing underneath the table to hold the umbrella up.

Yesterday, one of the umbrellas began to tip under its own weight because it got jostled somehow, and crashed into the table--which just happened to have a glass top.

I can only imagine the sound it made as it shattered, and how the customers nearby reacted. The table top ended up in lots of little pieces, none bigger than a pea.

At least I didn't have to clean up the mess for once!

    Sounds like an OFT* situation.

*OFT = Oh f*** this. This situation normaly results in everyone nearby putting on as much distance as possible to avoid being the one who has to deal with it.

What? None of the customers asked for a discount on that set?

Just label it "Some assembly required"

I did that once with some broken light bulbs.
