  • Car audio installation warning signs

Some warning signs that the next vehicle I work on might not be as much fun as I'd hoped. Sadly, all of these are learned from experience.

--Customer explains at drop-off how easy the job is going to be, how long it should take and how he'd do it himself if he had the time/tools/garage/if it wasn't so cold out.

--After handing over the keys, customer asks for them back so he can "get something out of the car". Removes a shoe box from the trunk and gives it to a friend to hold before bringing back the keys.

--Large calligraphic lettering on the rear window.

--Various plastic interior panels have been re-finished with spray paint.

    --"Flintstone" braking system installed.

--Driver exits the vehicle via passenger side rear door.

--After I pull the car into the bay, customer helpfully notes that his reverse gear doesn't work.

--Customer explains that he didn't bring a leash for the large dog in the back seat, but assures me that he won't bother me if I don't bother him.

--Customer explains that he had his friend do 90% of the installation, and that all I need to do is "finish it".

--Customer warns me to watch out for possible old needles hidden in the vehicle, left over from an earlier period of heavy drug use.

--Customer is a 17-yr old girl, vehicle was a birthday present from Daddy, and she needs a car alarm so those jealous bitches at school won't key her doors any more.

I bet that was a pain to move! Somewhat along those lines...if my car is at an unfamiliar shop, I always ask if they can handle a 5-speed. I'd rather ask than find my car's clutch burnt. Also along those lines, if the car is locked, I tell them that the driver's door lock doesn't always pop up. I know what's wrong with it--one of the lock solenoids has seized, and I don't have time to take the door apart and fix it properly. Use the key, and it's all good.
