If you MUST give out your last name why are you allowed to use a fake one?

Don't get me wrong, I think giving out last names is dangerous, but why would your employer tell you that you have to do it but then let you use a fake one?

probably to prevent more ass-hattery and bitching from SC's.

Yes. Without asshattery we would not exist!

I wasn't trying to be funny asking that question...it just truly doesn't make sense to me.

No worries, Canadian In Maine, it's probably just to appease the Gods of Suck. You know, offer a virgin, bathed in a cup of a service reps tears and your last name.

Iradney, if you want to have some fun with giving out last names; anagrams are the way to go.

Best anagram I heard of was "I'm loving it" going to "ailing vomit".

Actually, I use that as the name of a Guild Wars monk...

As far as I know there aren't really any laws about privacy or not giving out personal information, but I do know that the right to privacy is mentioned in the Constitution. ...
*twitch* Actually, it isn't mentioned in the Constitution. You're thinking of the Fourth Amendment's restrictions on search and seizure. The SCotUS has stated that a right of privacy is implied from the 4th, but it's far from hard and fast. It can - and has at times - been interpreted that we have freedoms and liberties, but one of those is not privacy, especially in the face of security issues.

To sum, they may watch you all they want, so long as they practice no actual search and seizure. Debate on definitions of what 'watching' and 'search and seizure' mean still ongoing.

Noted, BIC, but I'm South African, so I'm referring to our Constitution
But thank you for the info anyway, it's always useful to learn something new!

I DO NOT give out my last name to a customer. EVER. They DO NOTneed to know my last name. If a customer asks me I just say its real hard to pronounce....usually they just stand there and look waiting for me to pronounce it but I don't. One of these days Im gonna get busted I just know it But the manager didn't make it mandatory that we have to give out our last names....just our first names.
NEVER underestimate the stupidity of the customer

I think I'm going to change my name to Carmella Umbrella. Just because. And actually give it when customers ask for it.

That's is completely unnecessary. Why the hell would customers need your last name? Maybe if there are several employees with the same first name, but in that case, I would give my supervisor a list of surnames we made up. So if a customer wants to provide feedback on an Ashley Potlucky, the super just has to look on the little list for the employee's real name.

giving your full name out to a customer could be dangerous. Umm, it's called a phonebook! I definitely wouldn't put vandalism or hell, even arson past some of the yahoos I encounter on a daily basis.

I just tell 'em I'm the only D____ who works there. Hell, they could tell my boss "I don't remember his name, but it started with D", and it'd still get me. No one who works there has the same first initial, let alone first name.

Iradney, if anybody ever asks you your name, again, tell them your name is Janet.

                                Last name "Upurass"
