I'm on call for the week, so while I get paid a pittance, I can't go and see any family this year.

This year, about all I'll get for Christmas is some free food at the cafeteria.

    B
I'm also on call, and since my partner is on vacation guess who gets to answer _every_ call? And I'm "saleried" so no pay unless I actually come in, nothing for having to answer the #$&%*# phone even in the middle of the night!

I got a pleasant surprise today:

I knew that I'd have from Dec 22nd - Jan 2nd off, and had therefore expected I should take approx. 7 working days' selfpaid vacation.

But it turns out that according to my temp contract, I get some of the days off paid anyway, so I only have to pay 3 of them myself! YAY!
And on top of that I got a cake as Xmas present from the company. I hadn't expected that, since I've only been there for what, 4 days...

I'll be working. Of course I work in a Hasidic village, and it's not our holiday, so I'm not sure if that really counts for this survey. Store's open normal hours.
I once worked in the offices of a small import firm. Wish I hadn't moved from the area, as the place was a great place to work, the people were awesome. The owners and most of the workers were Jewish ( only knew three of us in the office who weren't, we joked about being the token Protestant, Catholic & Budhist ), so they closed on all Jewish holidays. But they also closed on the same holidays most non-Jewish offices were closed, as it would be hard to do any business when everyone else was closed. So we had double holidays off.

        Madness takes it's toll....
        Please have exact change ready.

I'll be working on Christmas. It's a matter of time and distance - my Monday delivery is too far to get home from in one day's driving.

My boyfriend WAS supposedly working Christmas Day.

Then about 2 weeks ago, this gem of an email drops into his inbox:

"<company> will close at 7pm on Christmas Eve. All frontline staff will be off Christmas Day"

My boyfriend tends to alternate between working the support desk and working the front counter for his ISP. Basically the duties are the same, but the difference is the unlike the support desk, he also provides support face to face. He also hates having to wear a uniform (he doesn't have to when he's on the call floor)

As it turns out, he WAS working "frontline" that week and gets Christmas day off. Unfortunately, it's now too late for him to join the Christmas Day bash.

As a neat little consolation prize though, he's working Boxing Day instead. He does get holiday pay for these though (double-time-and-a-half) and the company treats him fairly well. (he could end up working anything from 7am-midnight Monday-Saturday)

I work in hotels. Not working on Christmas is reserved for upper management. Almost everyone works on Christmas. In most hotels, you're paid time and a half for it. I've been lucky in that the last 4 and a half years, I've worked at a head office, and haven't had to work Christmas because head office always closed.

This time, however, I'm unemployed. At this point, I'd be willing to work on Christmas. My unemployment is running out.

I work Christmas every year, the railroad runs 24/7/365. Somehow my shifts always seem to line up where I work Christmas and New Years nights every year. I don't mind as it would be just me and my husband for the day as both our families are so far away. I wish I could get a New Years off once in a while though.

Thankfully my pizza place is closed 2 days a year Xmas and Thanksgiving.

BUT (and this is a BIG but) if a big home football game is scheduled on one of those days, there has been serious talk from the owners about being open on those days.

Now mind you that senior management/owner will all be sug in their nice houses, in front of a roaring fire, most likely with friends and food and plenty of drink whilst their peons run around making pizza and delivering it.

I am working Christmas Eve from 11-7 but I have off Christmas day. I was also lucky to have Thanksgiving day off this year too. We are required to work 3 of the 5 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Years. My boss puts up a sign up sheet and as long as enough people sign up for each holiday she follows what we signed up for. Last year I wound up picking up an extra one on New Year's day due to a no show. My boss actually only scheduled me for 2 holidays this year since I got stuck with an extra one last year. I was given a light schedule the week of New Years and someone had been crossed off the schedule for New Years Day so I went to one of my bosses and told him I would take that shift since I really did not need 3 days off that week. We go out for dinner on New Years Eve but I don't go out and party all night. So I am opening front register on New Years Day. By doing this I should be able to keep my 2 days off (Fri/Sat) because I will have plenty of hours now.

Casinos don't close (except for major storms) so yes I'll be working and no I won't get time and half or any extra pay BUT it's not that bad.

You see, I work an early morning shift and we're only doing a half day on the 25th. Therefore I should be out of there by no later than 7:30 am.

Also, I have the day after Christmas off (which ROCKS because the World Junior Hockey championships start then! Hey, have I no NHL, give me a break).

It's also nice that I will probably be home before my wife even wakes up on Christmas morning so I will get to spend the whole day with her.

25th and 26th are always free in business I'm in. 24th also, but some people work but only from 9 to 12. This year 24th was also free, I did read it from local newspaper (our companys ad). Nice way to tell "no need to come at work"-?

The railway in the UK closes on Christmas eve and reopens on the 27th (partner works for them). I think the only part that doesn't is maintenance who use that time to do things that require the tracks to be closed. New Year it is open though.

I'm not scheduled to work Christmas. I worked Thanksgiving. Usually, you get one or the other off. The way our holiday pay works, I'll still get holiday pay for Christmas (it's based on your average hours for the last two pay periods). It's been rather annoying hearing the housekeepers whining about having to work Christmas. Hey, you said you could work holidays. It's a hotel, you should expect it. The ones that are whining have only been with us for less than 6 months, too.

Hubs is also getting Christmas off. He's only had 1 day off in the last five weeks, so he's earned it. Often one of us will manage to get a holiday off, but not both at once, so this is a rare treat we plan to enjoy.

Hubby starts a new job (security) today, and tomorrow, working 10-10pm. Its a shame being that its our first Christmas as a married couple, but we understand that he couldn't very well turn down his first 2 shifts regardless when they were scheduled for. We'll do something nice together on the 26th

                              Merry Christmas to all.

I've gotta work Christmas at my second job, which was expected since it's a gas station. Nice thing is everyone is scheduled that day, but for no more than 4 hours, and we all get time and a half. I've gotta be there from 6am-10am, but that means I'll be home by the time everyone else gets coherent and it'll probably be dead since most people are either sleeping in or opening presents.
