We're doing a lot of hiring where I work, which has created several openings for supervisors. It seems almost everyone who's been there more than a few weeks has applied.
The department manager came up with an interesting idea... give all the applicants some minor duties as an opportunity to "prove themselves." So, the place is lousy with people wandering around showing that they "have what it takes."
Apparently, part of what it takes is "being a team player."
So, every walk to the break room has now become an adventure in dodging virtual strangers saying, "Everything going okay? If you have any problems, I'm always here." Rah, rah, rah. Last week, many of these people seemed to think answering a phone was an intrusion on their websurfing time.
It may all work out for me... while everyone else is distracted, I'm quietly trying to transfer from tech support to corporate. It's where the future is, and the less competition, the better.
Remember: there's no "we" in "team."
