  • Bittersweet Promotion (long)

Currently, I am working front desk at a hotel. I have been here nearly a year now and about 4 months ago our front desk supervisor quit without notice. Now, at the time, I was the only front desk clerk with the availability who had enough experience. I was pretty sure I was going to get the promotion. I didn't say that I was interested for fear of appearing to step over the line. A couple days later, someone I have never seen before is sitting in the office working. I soon find out she is the new front desk supervisor. She used to work for the company in a different hotel just down the street (before we switched locations) and our GM knew her and found out she was looking for a job.

I was dissapointed but I trust the judgement of my managers. After all, she had more experience...she used to be a general manager. Well, the time goes on and I don't like her. She can't run a computer, she is rude and she makes a terrible manager. Between bringing her problems from home to work and complaining constantly I just couldn't take it. I figure it's mostly my perception...after all, I was jealous a bit. But one day I finally can't tolerate it anymore, after she leaves I tell my managers I need to talk with them.

I told them everything and it turns out I am not the only one to complain. The other employees and customers alike don't care for her. My managers tell me they would like to know if I would like her position once the slow season starts. Heck yes!

Most of the company doesn't know yet....but my manager has been putting me on odd hours because she is training me and people are starting to talk. I haven't spilled the beans. I don't want any hostility at work.

I came in today to find that I have a warning! It seems yesterday while I was in training with my manager, the drawer became short $20.00 since there were no cash transactions for the day, the managers are upset. They went to look at the cashier bank reports to find that nobody had filled them out for the day including me. So they gave a written warning to everybody.

I didn't think I needed to count the drawer since I was training the whole day in the office I have been the only one doing the required paperwork until now so I'm upset by it.

I'm not sure if I should talk to my manager about it. She knows where I was (with her) and she knows I have been diligent in my reports.

Yep, talk to your manager. Especially if this is a written warning that ended up in your employee record.

It will be. That is why I had to sign it and drop it in the safe to be filed away on Monday. In all of my employment history this will be the first time I have been written up for anything.

I have a vague memory of reading in the operations manual that employees cannot be held personally accountable for shortages in a drawer that is accessible to multiple employees at the same time. Our drawer does have a key but it is rarely locked. Even if they are not deducting anything from my paycheck or asking me to cover the shortage, it is still upsetting.

Seconded. You have someone to vouch for you, and the paranoid part of me says that it's the current supervisor trying to screw you... but that's paranoid for you.

I cannot see how every person gets a write-up. Under UK law, and I know you're not here, the company would not be allowed to act in that fashion. It would need to assign blame to a particular person for the act, or it would face the very real risk of legal action from the employees concerned.

Yes, we have higher costs of living, higher taxes, and wonkier teeth, but our labour laws are rather better for the workers.

I had a small talk with my manager. She says that the owners of the hotel (we are independent so the owners have a more direct influence) have been pressuring our general manager to "clean up" everything at the front desk. The warning stays in my record but they know I am a good worker.

At the very least, my Assistant G.M. just told me today they are preparing to fire the current supervisor within the week so that clears the job up for me. A raise and more hours shall follow
