  • I guess my nose is getting really brown

Tonight was inventory night. Yeah, we all hate inventory. Normally, my department feeds the entire store during it, except we're in the middle of a remodel and just don't have the capacity to feed 200+ people.

My heart just about stopped when a page went on overhead - "Bean, come to the store manager office" tonight. Oh, shit. Usually you don't get paged in there (at least as a lowly employee) unless you're getting written up or fired. And even then, they usually have someone come get you in person, instead of paging you. So I walked in, with a "oh god what'd I do?" look.

One of the managers said "Hey you used to work for X pizza place right? See what kind of deal you can get us to feed everybody.". I jokingly said "No problem, damn I thought you were paging me to write me up or something." He said "Why, what'd you do?", then laughed at the look on my face.

I got a pretty damn good deal on a metric fuckton of pizza - except delivery would be about an hour. The manager at the pizza place told me he'd just sent everybody home, so I asked how long it would be for carryout. It was half the quoted time, so I asked the store manager if he wanted to pick it up. I didn't know this particular manager at the pizza place, but right up front I told him I was calling from X store and needed Y amount of pizza, and asked him what kind of deal we could work out. Remember I used to be a manager for said pizza company, so I know what kind of strings to pull.

Anyway, after asking my store manager if he wanted to pick it up.. he said no, then handed me a corporate credit card and told me to pick it up myself. I asked him if he wanted me to clock out first - he told me to stay on the clock. Just bring back an itemized receipt.

Wait, what?!? What just happened? Not only was I way into overtime at that point (at over $16/hour), I've just been handed a company credit card and asked to go pick up dinner for the entire store, while on the clock?!

As an added bonus, since it was carry out, there was no driver to tip. We tip very well when we order delivery (most of us in the store have worked tipped jobs at some point), so that saved us an additional $40-50. If it was my own CC I still would have tossed in a small tip for the in-stores, but that wasn't my decision.

So yeah.. maybe I'm brown nosing the management a bit? Even if I am, at least they know I bust my ass for the store even in unusual ways.

Doesn't sound like brown-nosing so much as you being kick-ass and getting recognized for it, Bean. As for the "On the clock" thing... you're still doing company business on company time, so they're pretty much required to pay you for it. It was a big sign of trust you being handed the card, though.
