Second languages are great!

First some background: my partners is Deaf (the capital D is to indicate a native signer, as opposed to just hard of hearing). I've been learning Auslan (Australian sign language) since we started dating in July 2006.

I had a Deaf customer tonight. After signing our way through the transaction he "said" he usually has to write notes to CSRs and it was great to meet someone who "speaks my language".

You're right, second languages are great. I once had a French woman come in trying to speak English as hard as she could, but wasn't getting far. So I started talking French to her (I'm a fluent French speaker). It was a good experience.

They are great. Which is why I am currently learning japanese.

I did learn sign language ages ago, when I was in guides, but it's gone the way of my french- somewhere in the back of my head where I can't access it at all except to recognise it as vaugely familar. Would like to get it back, actually.
