  • Minimum Wage Going Up

On the news tonight, they reported that MN's minimum wage is increasing to $6.90 on July 24, and to $7.90 on July 24, 2009. Starting in 2010, it will increase every year based on inflation.

This makes me happy! Even though I don't work for minimum wage, most of the others I work with ARE paid minimum wage. And in MN, we can't take a tip credit, so they actually get paid the full minimum wage plus tips. And you know what? I say good for them. Servers at restaurants have some of the most difficult jobs in existence.

Yep. It's going up all over. I was told my the hotel's accountant that by the time summer rolls around (June, I think is what she said) we'd be getting paid 2$ more an hour. This makes me very happy.

Bad thing about this is whenever minimum wage goes up, management likes to start cutting hours.

Min wage going up means I get to run shifts with fewer people on them. I can't wait.

Not to mention that everything starts to cost a little more. They have to pay their staff more, see?

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I'd like you to be aware of the ramifications.

I agree. In Iowa last year, they raised the minimum wage by $2. They did it in two parts. My employees were all excited.

The wage increase meant higher labor, less hours, we had to raise menu prices, cost of gas up, cost of food up, housing cost up, even the cable and utilities have seen increases. I think when all was said and done everyone broke about even.

Everyone making min wage will break even. Those of us making more than that effectivly get a pay cut.

When NJ's min. wage went up, at first I was happy. Cooooooool...more money for me. Then I realized--wait. My pay won't increase, and as a matter of fact, people just starting here will be making the same amount as me.

                That sucked.

I did manage to talk one of the managers into giving me a slight raise on that argument, though.

Pay differentials will come in as Becky pointed out.
