  • Back to an old job...

I never thought I'd go back to doing this. Okay, I knew I would, but I denied it damnit.

I'm delivering pizza again, working for a general manager who fired me 3 years ago. How and why, you ask?

3 years ago I was pretty heavily involved in snortable drugs - mainly meth and cocaine. He tolerated a lot of crap out of me, mainly lates/no shows/call ins. About a month after he fired me, I cleaned up my act signifigantly, and haven't put anything up my nose since then.

The GM who first hired me at Papa Johns in 2000 is still a good friend of mine, though she's going through some very rough times (she's on medical leave with ovarian cancer). The other GM called her to talk, and asked her if she knew of anyone looking for work. She dropped my name, next thing I know Garry (yes, that's how he spells it) calls me up and offers me a job. I haven't talked to him since he fired me, but I always thought he was a great guy (even if I was pissed about being fired at the time).

I started Friday. I'm still learning the delivery area (he's in a different store now), and there's over 100 apartment complexes in the area, so I'm going to spend a lot of time getting lost in apartments. However, he's got an awesome hand picked staff there, the tips are above average, and they now pay $1.00 per delivery (... but charge the customer $1.50 for delivery, BOOOOO!) We sat down and talked today, mainly him inquiring about my, erm, slightly illegal drug habits (nonexistant except for a little bit of, uh, "greenage" occasionally, which he doesn't care about), and me apologizing for being an asshat and him apologizing for having to fire me. The first thing he told me when I walked in to do the formal paperwork was "you look a lot healthier now". I'm I'm a good 40 pounds overweight now, instead of drug addict thin, with long hair and I hadn't shaved in 2 weeks when I did paperwork. Go figure.

As much as I didn't want to have to deliver again, cash in my pocket every night is damn nice, and I couldn't ask for a better manager. Too bad it's a corporate owned store though, my hourly rate is a whopping $5.50/hour (PJ's corporate normally starts at 5.15, but I've got 5 years of experience..)

Enough rambling. I'm SURE I'll have plenty of SC stories soon - already put in 25 hours this weekend alone and I've gotten more than a few earfuls.

Bean, it sounds like this is more of a second chance and less backsliding. Good that your manager is cool and you guys work well together. And even better to hear that you're no longer wasting your hard-earned cash up the schnozz.

Bean's Apocryphal Pizza SC Stories...coming soon to a theater near you. Yay!
