Well, after about 5 weeks at my new job, and with most of the people who I work with liking me, I might-probably be training as a manager next week! I asked the store manager about one of the open positions, and she said she hired someone for it, but there were others available. When I talked to her later, after my shift, she offered the position and said that she'd need to do paperwork and another background check, and it probably wouldn't be finished til monday, but it's possible-probable that I'd be accepted for it. And that she would schedule me in for training next week.

    Good things! -

Higher hourly wage. Considering that our company is one of many that isn't going to be implementing raises for a long while (until next year unless changed), this is the only way to get higher-than-what-you're-getting-now. Which I'm not objecting to!

I'll finally, after several jobs of attempting and being put off by idiotic or jerkish managment, have a higher position than "lackey".

(Geek moment!) I'll be able to raid with my WoW group again!! (Quick background on that...) I play on europe servers, and live in US, for various reasons, and they always set raids starting about noon and ending about 5 or 6 pm my time, which ends up being roughly 6 pm to 11/12 pm for them. My shift changes will help out with this... which I will get into NOW....

    Bad Things! -

I'll be working closing shifts instead of opening. Which means I'll have to deal with more cleaning (a LOT more cleaning), more people (a LOT more people), and I'll be giving up the quiet, (relatively) slow shifts that I'm used to.

I'll be training to be in charge of a lot of people I don't even know, as I usually work mornings and they usually don't. :P

Not a Really Bad Thing, but I'll be out and around until 12pm/1am most shifts.

I'm still a noobie... wheras I might know most things about running the registers now, there's a lot I DON'T know about the rest of the store, or closing procedures.

I'm worried about being set up. There've been a few instances of people stealing, and gotten caught. Since I'd have a key to all the money/store... yeah. I'm also worried about being in charge of lots of high-priced items at night, where most of our shoplifters seem to target, time-wise.

And that's another thing I'll have to deal with. More shoplifting. I'm not that tall and usually not that imposing. Unless I know DAMN well what I'm doing, I tend to defer to most others on things.

    ...

Overall, I guess you could say I'm excited, and think I can handle it, but at the same time, I'm worried and scared that I can't.

I know we have several managers on board here... any suggestions and/or stories about promotions of your own? I'm starting to THINK about all the things that could go wrong now.

So, I OFFICIALLY got set in as a Manager today!!

Pay raise, key to the store, all that fun jazz!

    Whee...!

On top of that, I got complimented by my store manager about 10 times over the course of the day too... along the lines of "I think you'll be one of my best managers" and "you're clever, you catch on fast" and "don't worry, you'll be great"

I was shocked, amazed and even slightly uncomfortable for all the praise. I'm not used to it and I didn't think she thought even moderately of me, much less highly.

My first night on my own in charge was tiring, and only a few mess ups, but nothing huge. *yawn*

    Bed time!

Congratulations on the promotion. Don't stress too much on making mistakes. Just learn how to fix the ones you do make and how to prevent them in the future. As long as you don't set the store on fire, you should be fine.

I think the funniest story I ever have on getting promoted was when I was working at a fast food place at my local mall. I went in to work that evening and the manager asked if I'd had any previous work experience. My first thought on that was 'oh dear, where did I mess up to have her ask that?' I told her I did and she asked if I'd like to be a shift supervisor. Turns out the previous one had called in five minutes before her shift was going to start and said she'd found a better job and she quit. I accepted the position and we went from there. I won't go into details about the actual experience, but I will say there was never a dull moment after that.
