  • more news on my fabulous job

guess i should start with a bit of background for those who may not remember what happened with my job fromthe last board:

back in may i started working for a local (texas & mexico, anyway) grocery chain. my store is a hybrid between a regular store and the high-end gourmet stores operated by the same company. it's a new business model for the the company, so people in general weren't sure how it would work. i was hired as a deli clerk, part time to start, being told that i would be evaluated for full-time status at the three-month mark. after less than a month, my boss told me that he was so impressed by my performance that he was moving me to full-time early, and along with that and full benefits came quite a nice raise. he asked me if there was anything else he could do for me, and i asked to be transferred to the cheese shop, a subdepartment of the deli that which was where i'd wanted to be all along. i got my wish, and now i'm a cheese specialist.

that about covers the background, now for the most recent happenings:

my 6-month review came up, and at 6 months all partners are supposed to recieve a percentage increase to their pay. my boss said that my percentage wasn't enough for everything i do, and bumped me up even further, making what was initially about a 30 cent raise into a 75 cent raise. woohoo!

but that's not all. you see, as i said no one in the company was sure how this new model would work, but it's succeeded beyond everyone's wildest expectations. so the company is looking to build new stores on the same model (they call it up-end, which i suppose is a step below high-end), and to renovate a number of existing stores as well. my store was chosen to put on an up-end showcase for all the potential up-end store directors and department managers, not to mention the regional vps and unit directors. i was asked to help put on a presentation highlighting the cheese shop and everything we do, as well as how important partner and customer education on the products is. the presentation was a smashing success, and my unit director was suitably impressed.

a few days ago, i was called aside by my boss. apparently my unit director was so impressed by my performance, she told him to do whatever it took to keep me on (not that there was any danger of me leaving; i love my job). to that end, he promoted me to a cheese shop lead, and along with that gave me another hefty raise (and the funny thing is, i'd only received one paycheck at my previously raised rate). woohoo again!

so, to sum up: i work in a fabulous job, for a fabulous company that actually cares about its employees (and their families, for that matter) and isn't afraid to recognize their hard work. in just over 6 months with the company i've already been promoted twice and been given almost $4/hour in raises, and there's potential for much more. for the first time in 3 or 4 years (ever since i got laid off when the semiconductor industry tanked) my wife and i are in a pretty sound financial place, and i couldn't be happier. things keep looking better and better all the time!
