My father will be 55 in a few days, so we went out to dinner tonight for a slightly-early celebration (I'm closing on his actual birthday). We went to the Weathervane (a New England fried seafood chain) because my father wanted a fried clam platter.
I'd ordered a Captain Morgan's Punch, and for some reason the mixed drink prices weren't on the menu. So I asked to see the check to see how much that drink was.
And it wasn't on the check. The 3 sodas and the glass of wine were on it, but no other beverages.
We'd already paid at this point, so I approached our waitress to inquire, then had her put it on another check.
$7.
I handed her $8 cash.
My father said that was the best birthday gift he could have gotten. That is, a demonstration that he's raised an honest and trustworthy son. And as an added bonus, the server won't get in trouble for forgetting the drink, and there's good feelings all around. It's nice how doing the right thing does that.
