  • My first fondant cake

This was my very first attempt at a fondant cake.

I made a few mistakes that I can see, but overall, I'm proud of how it turned out.

The roses were all made out of fondant and formed by hand.

One of my former foster daughters, who has shown a real talent for cake decorating, helped me with the roses. She did the big ones, and I did the small ones and the rosebuds.

I want to reach through the screen and steal it...

i know firsthand what a pain roses can be. Mom took a cake decorating class, and learned how to make the sugar roses, including the itsy bitsy ones that had to be formed on toothpicks. I proved too clumsy at it. Just not one of my skills, but I applaud anyone who can do it. That looks tasty, Ree!

    I want cake now...

Apparently, fondant is a bitch to work with. My sister worked as a professional cake decorator for several years, and when she attempted to use fondant for the first time on our parent's 50th anniversary cake she had alot of trouble with it. In fact, her husband finally was the one who successfully put the fondant on the cake. My sister then finished the decorating. It turned out beautiful, but I hated the taste of the fondant. I ate the cake and left it on the plate.

            I know!
I seriously don't know why anyone would want it.
Fondant seems really popular now, though.

When I first said I would do the cake, I assumed it was buttercream. (It was for a friend of mine at work. Her son was getting married.) She showed me a picture, then, and it was a fondant cake with the fondant swag.
I had never done fondant, but I figured it's always good to learn a new skill.
I figured it would still be buttercream for the roses. though.

A day or so later, she said the bride wanted the roses out of fondant as well.

I did lots of "googling" for how to videos, let me tell you.

            Thanks for the compliments, everyone.

Like I said, I see a few mistakes, but I'm still proud of a first effort.

That cake looks too pretty to just sit there . . . I wonder if anyone would miss a rose or two . . .

In all seriousness, that's a wonderful looking cake. I can't remember if I've ever had fondant before, though.

I think it depends on the fondant...I've had some that was tasty (for all I know it wasn't really fondant?)... but usually it just tastes like plastic. blech. I don't understand the obsession with it, except that it does look pretty.

That is a beautiful cake Ree! I'd say that's a pretty awesome first attempt! I love checking out your cake pics.

WOW Ree!!! That cake is absolutely beautiful!!! Great job.

I'd rather work with buttercream too. I don't like the taste of fondant. But there is this one company, I think it's Satin Ice Fondant, their fondant actually tastes really good.

But wow... That cake is so beautiful!!!

That's a really nice fondant cake Ree, and for your first try too! I wouldn't have even guessed it was your first from looking at it. I would have thought you've done quite a few.
