  • Increase duties

    Well....sort of.

As we've lost two supervisors fairly recently, we're sort of backed up on people who can effectively serve cigarettes and handle other roles. The average age of most employees is around 17/18 thereabouts, however there are only two of us who get night shift on a regular basis and aren't full supervisors. (there are only five of us total who are regular operators...well seven if you count the cross-trained folk.)
Well, as one of them was off for two weeks sick, I've had the chance to fill in to an extent. The others are all underage and/or haven't been with the company long enough.

This has basically meant that I do the following:

-Serve cigarettes (and get the hang of ID'ing people...any tips by the way?)
-relieve the supervisors for their 15-minute breaks (as they're paid breaks, it's not an issue if I need help-also, I have a fully trained manager on hand at all times.)
    -answer most enquiries.
-thankfully I don't handle complaints yet...more luck though.

And to a lesser extent, that also means handling some of the lockup duties at the end of the night while the supervisor counts the drawers out.

Hope you're getting an increase in pay as well...

I think the best advice on ID'ing is..card everyone. Anything else, well, hmm... don't know. Best of luck to ya!

Make sure to mention how well you handled the increased duties when it comes to promotion/pay raise time.

I work in a supermarket. Payrises are automatically decided by the union, HOWEVER...

-There is a "supervisors" allowance according to how many people you supervise. I believe this is weekly. (not the reason why I want a promotion) Pay is also decided on age. (there's a whole another issue with this one, however, companies are not allowed to outright refuse a job to someone based on age.)

-My actual front end manager does not want me serving cigarettes. It's not just me, it's ALL the non-supervising folk. She does have a semi-legitimate reason for it though: due to the register ONLY being used to sell cigarettes, mobile phones, process refunds, break change and sell phone credit, it's more vulnerable to scams and shortages. So if money goes missing from that register, it's easier to keep track of who's used it. The other supervisors don't seem to mind as much.

-There have been five times where I've had no choice but to serve cigarettes: the first three were when I was doing open shifts and the supervisor had to run to get something or do a job, the last two were from the same night I got to play supervisor.

-I have a slight inkling that my front end manager DOES know I've served cigarettes, but she hasn't mentioned anything. Nor have I been punished for it. (speaking of which, I really should check out why I'm stuck on the butt end registers repeatedly)

-The supervisor that I played backup for the other night is the assistant manager.
