My boyfriend's daughter works in hospital administration. She has a lively and humorous thread going on her Facebook page about this. For example, bf pointed out that the most common codes in this house are W61.01XA and W61.01XD. Followed by T78.09XAD.

For those too lazy to look them up, those would be bitten by a parrot, initial encounter; bitten by a parrot; subsequent encounter and anaphylactic reaction due to other food products, subsequent encounter.

It might be the case we have an ill-tempered parrot.
At the conclusion of an Irish wedding, the priest said "Everybody please hug the person who has made your life worth living. The bartender was nearly crushed to death.

Wow, those are some specific codes. I assume there are other codes for "bitten by $other_type_of_bird".

Just curious, but a lot of food for larger birds contains peanuts (a common allergen). Would being bitten by a parrot which had recently eaten food containing peanuts be enough to trigger a reaction in someone who was allergic to peanuts?

For some people, being breathed on by someone who ate peanuts 24 hours ago is enough to put them in hospital. I know of one lady who hasn't dared leave her house for nearly 5 years thanks to being that sensitive. Thank goodness for online shopping!

Of course, if someone at the factory that made the product, at the DC that packaged it, or the UPS/USPS people handling the boxes ate a peanut butter sandwich for lunch and didn't properly wash their hands before returning to work...

Aaaaaaannnnddddd, the first snags have hit! Remember how I said doctors' offices are going to screw up? Yeah. Patients are spending forever in registration because their doctors haven't sent orders that are ICD 10 compliant. So our compliance nurses have to call them up to get new orders. And the docs wander into the office when they darn well feel like it. Oh, got someone scheduled for 0630 and the order's not right? Well, the office doesn't open until 0800 and the doctor doesn't get in until 1000. One guy today was down there for over an hour and a half and we ended up having to reschedule him. I don't know if he had a problem order, but considering how many other patients did, it pushed him back as well. Which is impacting our patient satisfaction scores (and not in a good way even though it's not our fault), and we're cutting it close on our radiotracers being in range (dose calibrated for 10, we don't get the patient till 12....).

E-mailed BossLady about it just to give her a heads up and got the standard "It's a learning process" and "Try explaining the switch to your patients so they don't get mad." Ok, I realize that. There are kinks that need to be worked out and that takes time. I'm just letting you know about a big one so that, I dunno, you can pass it on to other managerial types and start working on a solution? Isn't that why you're here?

On January 16th, I'm taking my CPC exam on ICD 10, CPT, and everything else. ICD 10 CM is a lot more thorough than the PCS code books, which are more for hospitals. Just stay ahead of the doctors and maintain your competence. You might be the bean counters, but you count more than you think.

On the other hand... WTF have I gotten myself into? OMG ....

Due to recently bashing of my rt hand with a hammer (6 times, same spot, in under a half hour. I'm a little stubborn and/or stupid) I was at a hand specialist getting diagnosed with the mother of all bone bruises. On the way out 3 highly paid and educated professionals were trying to find the appropriate IDC 10 code for "struck hand with hammer". They came up with (via Google) "struck by orca", "struck by duck" and "struck by turtle". Nothing about hammers, mallets, sledge hammers or similar to describe my injury.

Apparently getting struck by a duck is a billable option but striking your hand with a hammer isn't. They eventually settled on this one: 'Contact (accidental); with; tool; hand (not powered); workbench" as being close enough.

I was commiserating about ICD 10 with a patient who was also a nurse. They were trying to find the most ridiculous code. The best they'd come up with at that point was "Caught fire while skiing."
I'd tell you where to go, but I work there and I don't want to see you everyday.

That's a strange one! Did they have separate codes for downhill and cross-country?

No idea. But I was trying to imagine the scenario that led to the inclusion of it.

Now I want to know how those codes had enough incidences to need a code!

Alien abductions have codes. Why not getting hit by various wildlife?

It's not 1st April; please tell me you're not serious. Please.

This actually makes sense if you are working in an ER or a psychiatric facility. Abduction by aliens is a common claim by mentally ill patients.

What they did wrong was they didn't code you for your bone bruise - hand, which can be found in the S index. (your diagnosis). But instead they coded what happened, which you're not supposed to do. I'd code it under the S69 codes which is injury to your hand.
