  • my lil horror story (longish)

a couple months ago i came down with a nasty bug. It started around 11 at night. I had this awful pain in my gut, and i couldn't stop throwing up. this continued till about 7 am, when my (blind) mother found me curled up on the bathroom floor. My dad works in a town an hour's drive away, so I wound up going to the local walgreens with my mother. I passed out at the walgreens, but i managed to come around and get back to the car. I have very minor medical insurance, so i ended up going to the local quick clinic, which supposedly advertises that they accept walk ins. I went in, still throwing up about every 5 minutes and in horrible pain from the muscle strain. the nurse said i needed an appointment. there was nobody else in the place, no patients, just three nurses,a secretary, and the dr. I finally got the nurse at the desk to agree to let me see the dr. I had to pay upfront for the visit. all i had was a 100 dollar bill, which my mother gave me. the nurse tried to tell me that she couldn't break it,,,(the change would have been less than 20 dollars.) she finally took it. i sat in the waiting room for another hour, throwing up in the garbage can every couple minutes. finally i went back to the window, and begged to see the dr. she said i would have to wait. I puked on her. 5 minutes later i was seeing the dr. the dr said my veins had collapsed and i needed fluid. she set me up with an IV and antibiotic shot. the nurse who did the IV stabbed me in the arm about 5 times, till it bled, before realizing that i needed a baby needle. they left me with the IV, an hour after it finished, they came and took the needle out, and i promptly threw up again. the nurse administered the shot, in the backside, left the needle in, and WALKED AWAY to place her order with the secretary for lunch at taco bell. came back and took out the needle. i went home, crashed for about 3 days, and a week later got hit with a bill for 600 dollars for the shot and the IV. it was NOT worth it. I should have just let it run its course. -.-

What kind of backwater clinic was that? That's almost as bad, if not worse than my epic ER visit. Those people, especially the nurse who left the friggin' needle in you, need to be reported.

Given your veins collapsed and you needed fluids... letting it run its course would have (probably) been worse.

Still, report each and every one of them for medical malpractice. -_-

This sounds as shady as the walk-in clinic my grandfather went to once... they basically would ask you what you wanted and how much of it, then write you a prescription for ANYthing. Without asking what you were even there for!

            Malpractice lawsuit!
Leave a needle in me and go wandering off to order Taco Bell? I don't fucking think so!

I don't see where the doctor did anything wrong in this instance.

The person who needs to be reported is the nurse, if she was in fact a nurse. She may have been a medical assistant. Clinics like this often use them because they are cheaper than nurses. It matters because you need to know who to file the complaint against.

If she was a nurse, then it's the nursing board. If she is a medical assistant, then it would be the medical board (medical assistants practice on the license of the physician), and whatever state board regulates the MA's (often the medical board).

The OP did need the IV as she was probably getting very dehydrated. The antibiotic was probably unnecessary unless a white blood count was elevated. It sounds like simply gastroenteritis (stomach flu) which is usually viral and self resolving but can result in dehydration and electrolyte imbalances (hence the IV).

Leaving a needle in a patient is inexcusable. It could have broken off and been left in the muscle.

That you had to pay up front is not surprising. Doctors work "fee for service." If you have no insurance, then they have NO obligation to treat you. Only ER's are covered by EMTALA. Not clinics. So actually, the desk clerks did nothing wrong. They could have just told you to call 911 . . . they might even have done it for you if you asked. And they would have been perfectly OK in the eyes of the law to do so.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.
