I've heard of junkies starting IVs on themselves in between knuckles, but that takes the proverbial cake. Wow.

Ugh, IV practice was the worse part of paramedic school. Some of us did get good at starting them on ourselves. I've had my share of a huntin' we will go people.
I was bored and volunteered to help hubbys navy issue EMT class as a training dummy. Over the course of the summer I got the complete overseas package and recruit package of innoculations, was evacuated from numerous vehicles on backboards, in mast gear and in one festive afternoon in the swimming pool had the person at the head and the person handling the body misunderstand which direction each one was to turn their respective parts to flip me over, they declared me dead and I spent an afternoon letting them do IV insertion finals as I pretty much am not bothered by getting needles shoved in anywhere [well, between the toes is annoying]

My aunt is an ER nurse and had a junkie she couldn't get blood out of. He was a walking turnip (his words.) After she unsuccessfully tried several times he got tired of being poked and gently took the syringe away from her. Before she could do anything sensible, he whipped it out and calmly proceeded to do a draw from a vein in his penis! I would have killed to have seen the look on her face.

      Pretty much my opinion also!
EVE Online: 99% of the time you sit around waiting for something to happen, but that 1% of action is what hooks people like crack, you don't get interviewed by the BBC for a WoW raid.

I honestly think they should pass out handwarmers to people waiting to have blood drawn, just to get things flowing.

        ^-.-^

I wish they would. The last time I was in the ER, they had to get someone down from the lab to draw my blood and she was like "you're freezing, no wonder everyone's having a hard time!" and used an infant foot warmer to warm up my arms. It was heavenly. I'm usually at least a bit dehydrated, although I try to drink lots when I know I'm going to get blood drawn, and my veins are difficult to find in the first place, let alone get blood from. The last time I had to get blood drawn, the lady had to do it twice because she wasn't sure she got enough for the tests that needed to be done and thought I'd rather give it all then than have to come back.

Anyway. That's just...ouch. I hope reporting goes smoothly.

And getting it from a vein in his penis?!

There's actually a very good vein there, and yes it is sometimes accessed emergently.

I had a colleague once start an IV in a vein in some guy's eyebrow.

Mini update: I did finally find a place to submit my complaint and did so through their form yesterday. I haven't heard anything back yet.

I gotta ask where the tourniquet goes for that one.
