  • Is it okay to ask a dr for a referral?

I've never had to have a referral for anything before, so I'm not quite sure on the procedure.

Last time I was at the dr I mentioned some digestive issues that were bothering me a lot, and asking about my diet he mentioned that if I eat healthier they would most likely go away.

I have not been able to change my eating habits, and was hoping that visiting a nutritionist might help, but I don't know if it is appropriate to ask for a referral, or if I have to wait for the dr to suggest it.

You can certainly ask - however if you can't change your eating habits I'm not sure what the nutritionist will be able to do other than offer advice to change said habits..?
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

It's part of their job to refer you to people.

And yes, a nutritionist should be able to help you adjust your eating habits in a way that works with who you are and how you live.
      Seshat's self-help guide:
      1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
      2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
      3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
      4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

I would check your insurance policy (if you have one). You might be able to go straight to a specialist without a referral from your family doc. Unless you need a recommendation for a good specialist and want to ask your doc.

Check also your state laws. North Carolina you can go to a specialist without a referral and insurance has to pay.

          California, you can't.

But asking for a referral has the side benefit of being sent to someone your doctor knows. Also, he may decide to do a more in depth medical evaluation to rule out any problems requiring medication.

You may also consider a support group of some kind when it comes to making dietary changes. The problem there may be psychological, and some support may make it easier for you to make the changes you need to make. I know I am trying to modify my own diet and it is very difficult.
