Having spent half my life with two heavy smokers, all I can say is.. there isn't much you can do except deal. Especially if it's their house and their rules. (Fortunately one stopped and the other has very firm rules on where he can smoke and inside their house is off limits.)

You could try some small requests, "Could you please roll down the window? It's kind of hard for me to breath" (or if you are prone to mild carsickness - use "the fresh air keeps me from being so nauseated.") I've also used compliments in strange ways, like: "Oh, Aunty, I love the smell of your perfume! I wish I could get a better smell of it, but the smoke is just too much for me." Yeah, laugh, but it worked very well on my very vain Aunt. She didn't smoke the rest of the get together.

My next suggestion is to keep away from the house as much as possible. You don't have to go out and spend money. Just go out and walk the parks, woods, something away from the house. In warmer weather, suggest a small picnic in the park with the boyfriend or go out and read books. In the winter, go to the library or find a fun list of free or low cost things you can do together. Romantic and healthy alternatives.

For nights, you might try a low cost air purifier. Won't reduce it much, but every little bit helps. And when you get back home, wash everything you brought with you and what you can't wash air out. Preferably outside your home. That ashtray smell clings for fricking ever otherwise. I have to even to a saline (I follow the recipe my ENT gave me for it) snort to get rid of the smell from my sinuses.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.
