I almost hate to ask, but what is H&P? Hernia and Prostate??
History and Physical. It's a key part of establishing patient care.

I'm not sure which one is stupider. I wonder if this is a result from Tosh.0's cinnamon challenge...

I'll keep my bath salt ingestion through my skin thank you very much... in a nice tub full of hot water. And my cinnamon... is quite happy to remain in my baking and coffee.
I reported on a patient a while back who was injecting bath salts IV, and got an abscess as a result. Oregano has been sold as fake pot for decades (it smells sweet, and looks a lot like pot that is ready for use).

People will do anything to get high, basically.

OK, now I'm alarmed. I googled "snorting cinnamon" to see what came up, and let's just say there's a lot of folks who don't consider it a problem. For example:

"Cinnamon doesn't work, but nutmeg does." (Didn't one of our resident nurses just say snorting nutmeg is toxic?)

"Snorting cinnamon is perfectly normal. So is vomiting blood." This was in response to someone asking if vomiting blood after snorting cinnamon was bad. Holy hell.

        I did indeed.

Oy. And that was the first page of search results. I refused to look any further.

I have read that nutmeg is in fact hallucinogenic (though most sane people wouldn't ever ingest enough to be even remotely affected)

(Thread kind of reminds me of the old joke about the man who tried sniffing curry powder to get high... ended up slipping into a korma....)

What were those morons thinking? You don't snort cinnamon or nutmeg in order to get high (and as to nutmeg being toxic, that's true for all psychoactive substances - think of the root for "intoxicated"). If you want to get high from commonly-available substances, you smoke banana peels.

-- Patient was brought in because of drunkeness and some kind of cut. What kind of cut and exactly how serious was never ascertained because patient was a virulent misogynist and racist, and refused to let the E.R. staff -- which is largely composed of women, minorities, and sometimes even people who exhibit both of those characteristics -- work on him. Patient had IHATE tattooed across the fingers of one hand and NIGAS on the fingers of the other hand. Patient was offered the choice of shutting up and being treated or leaving. When he chose to leave, he was told, "There's the door. Get out." -- direct quote.

Don't forget, you have to dry them in the oven, crumble them and mix them with coffee grounds and molasses for best effect.

So is a person an idiot going around trying to inhale bark from cinnamon trees all fresh? LOL

I've heard this as well. Allegedly you have to eat an entire container. I've also heard that it then can make you very ill.

As far as cinnamon goes, I've only heard of the Cinnamon Challenge which simply involves attempting to ingest a large spoonful without choking, and posting the resulting video on YouTube. The few videos I've seen mainly involve the attempters coughing out a huge cloud of cinnamon followed by a lung.

Many herbs and spices have interesting effects if used as more than - well, herbs and spices.

Cinnamon, for instance, is a cumulative poison. (I have heard that modern commercial cinnamon has that element removed, so you can safely have your cinnamon toast every morning without dying now.)

Nutmeg the hallucinogenic someone else has already mentioned.

I would have to look up the others; but yes, the average kitchen cabinet is a wealth of toxins. The vegetable garden even more so. And as for the decorative garden.... wheee-hooo. Never let foxglove or oleander get onto your skin; and if either get into mucous membranes, get to a hospital.

                        1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
                        2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                        3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                        4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Modern cinnamon is very rarely cinnamon, but rather bark from the cassia, or chinese cinnamon, tree. You can easily tell the difference if you buy cinnamon sticks. Cinnamon is thin and crumbles when you touch it. Cassia is thick and feels like tree bark.

Modern commercial "cinnamon" isn't cinnamon in the first place, it's cassia.

(Real cinnamon tastes like red-hot candies; cassia tastes like, well, what everyone calls cinnamon nowadays. If you get it in sticks, you can tell the difference thus: cassia is one solid piece of bark, cinnamon is many thin layers.)
