A lot of factories make the same batch of medicine all at once. They will label some bottles with the name brand item so the stores can charge full price. Then they take product from the same batch and put into generic bottles for stores like Dollar Tree. It's all the same stuff it just depends on who is marketing the item and what they want to pay for the product.

We have the other with our doctors - the cheaper almost 'generic' of one of Hubbys meds is constantly out of stock (I think its stopped production or its being shipped to more 'profitable' places for bodybuilding) and yet the Doctor refuses to prescribe the better version because of cost . Without the prescription we can't get it and the prescription for the other one won't enable the pharmacy to give us the more expensive one.
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

In the UK, if the doctors prescribe the generic, the pharmacy can distribute any brand or generic of that type (basing it on either cost or availability). However, if they specify a brand then the pharmacist has to give that particular type.
