  • Yes, you have to know it!

I was walking through to student study area towards the main office of the building where I teach. A bunch of Bio students were studying there for an exam. One of the students turned to a couple of girls studying nearby and asked,

"Do we have to know how the heart works?"

I turn around and say to the student, "Yes. Yes, you do."

I still hold that knowing what a G-protein coupled receptor isn't that useful a thing for me to know. I mean, I totally understand that someone has to, I just don't think that's me.

It's definitely not me. While I do have to understand many processes at the cellular level, there are limits to the usefulness of that kind of thing when it comes to nursing. For me, it's enough to know it exists only in terms of how it relates to pharmacology or other nursing treatments. If I can't connect it to nursing care, it's not useful to me.

Medicine is a horse of a different color. I know an OB who told me there does get to a point where all that stuff comes together and makes it easier to plan the right medical treatments for patients needs.

I hope that student wasn't planning on becoming a cardiology nurse.

Or ER Nurse. Or ICU Nurse. Or probably other specialties I'm not remembering. My cousin who is a floor nurse in a mid-sized hospital still says she deals with patients with heart issues all the time.

After doing pregnancy coding for 10 months, *I* could probably guide most girls through a pregnancy except for actually doing the exams. I know when to do what and what meds to RX out. LOL

Pfft, of course not. If anything goes wrong, just flail your arms wildly and run around the room until the Grim Reaper character comes and replaces the patient with an urn.

Oh... wait, you're not playing The Sims?
