  • Sucky singer.

Not too sure where to put this - if it needs moving, please go ahead!
I think I've posted once before on here, but I've been off work for a while and have read every thread so I thought maybe it was time I gave something back ...

<bg> I work for a bank, well, I have a job at a bank, I haven't been since December for various shitty reasons, but am going back a week on Monday - wish me luck!

When I'm not working for a bank I'm a singer/songwriter and play in a duo with my dad! We got asked to do a charity event in Bristol (about 2 hours away) for Macmillan (Cancer charity) and were more than happy to do it 'cause we know the people organising it really well and one of their housemates has cancer so it's very poignant to them!</bg>

Right - so, we're at this event which is 12 noon until 11pm, and I think we got there about 3. This "lady", i use the term loosely, got up to play, she was probably in her early 60's - we had 30-40 minutes each - and her first comment was "I'll start when the people at the front stop talking."

Of course everyone looked at her as if to say "are you for real?" and a few laughed but she kept a straight face.

    Oh shit!

So she eventually starts and plays a few songs, all of which are her own songs and ... pretty dull. Not a good guitarist, not a great singer, not interesting songs. Usually, being a musician I can find something that I like - no, nothing! And after about 4 songs she screeches "This man at the front was on earlier and I was here and I listened to all of his songs and now he's talking through my set!!!" like a toddler.

Now, one of the most important things you learn being a musician - especially playing in pubs is that the audience will not listen unless you a) play something they know or b) are amazing!

I get that talking while people are playing is rude - but I have a feeling that if she hadn't started her set like that people would have shut up a bit more. You earn respect y'know...

It may just be me, but it made me so angry! You're playing at a charity gig on a Sunday afternoon in a pub, full of people who see each other once or twice a year, you're playing your own songs which are crap and you expect everyone to shut up and listen, and are rude enough to pull up individuals that want to talk to their friends.

    No!

On a positive note, we went on about 8 - when a lot of people had had quite a few to drink and we got one of the best receptions of the day - because we played mainly covers that people know! And she'd gone home before we played - so I didn't have to bite my tongue while on stage!

Not that I would have said anything anyway ....

And I certainly didn't rant about her on twitter...

Well, as we all know, the charity event really was all about HER...
