Buh? When did Easter and Good Friday turn in to mini-xmas with a bunny theme?
My wife has a disability so she has a Home Health Aide come in a couple times a week to help around the house. Yesterday I overheard them talking about Easter. It seems this HHA spent "only" $200 on her two kids for Easter, down from the $500 she spent the year before.

I remember growing up if my parents spent $20 (that includes the candy) on each of us, that was alot.

Geez, I got each of my kids those Kinder Egg assortment baskets (like $5 each) and we colored Easter eggs. That's it. I bought my mom a spur-of-the-moment Easter bunny on the way to Easter dinner because I saw one in the shop window with broken ears (long backstory... suffice to say, my brother and I never received a chocolate Easter bunny that still had ears on it), so I *had* to buy it other than that, I avoid stores around holiday-time. Sorry you had to deal with that Mysty.

Stories like these make me glad I...I don't have kids, and/or am not religious. I had a relatively quiet Easter.

It seems like people need to start creating their own Easter traditions! When I was a kid, we didn't get toys, unless it was the occasional stuffed bunny. We got to dye eggs though. If we didn't get that box of Paas by at least 2 weeks before, I'd go crazy.

I just looked it up, because it's fun. "Paas" comes from "passen," the Pennsylvania Dutch word for Easter. Or actually, Passover, which makes more sense. Since Eastre is some kind of Saxon fertility goddess who turned a bird into a rabbit that laid colored eggs. Fascinating.

We did. We liked it so much that we created our own Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years traditions. Admittedly, most of them are modifications on what other people do... but much, much simpler. And yes, it makes life much easier/bearable at those times of year.

In my family, the point of any and all holidays (Xmas, Easter, Birthdays, etc) is to get together, enjoy eachothers' company, and eat rather too much delicious food. As my cousin L and I always say, the goal is to eat yourself immobile.

My mom tends to go a bit overboard, especially given that I'm 23 and my brother is now 21, and still does stockings from "Santa" for both of us, her, my father and my grandma, who comes over for Xmas eve dinner, and she still does Easter baskets from the bunny for my brother and I. But they usually include things she would've bought/given us anyways (a cute shirt, chopsticks for my hair, and a pair of sweats were in my Easter basket this year) and a bunch of candy.

So far, I've had to make the store runs for both Thanksgiving of last year and Easter of this year, along with the Superbowl, for things my mom has forgotten, then remembered at the last minute. I'm like a woman on a mission, and I wind up nearly homicidal every time.

"But I was still wedged between the $20 and $10 baskets,... so the entire 25 minutes I was in line (I was timing it), I was nonstop surrounded by screaming kids demanding overpriced crap.
Unfortunately, this was not particularly good for me and I was getting very, very overwhelmed by the whole situation...clinging very hard to my cart and just trying to keep from running for the door, cold sweats, the whole fun nine yards....
I curled up in the backseat of my car with my hands over my ears for about fifteen minutes until I got my composure back enough to trust that I could make it home."

Oh my gosh someone else does this! *aspie ->* I would have been the exact same way- that's like a car ride with my family was when I forgot to bring headphones. Thank heaven for earbuds and walkman and iPod!!!
By the way, I love reading your posts- you are a joy as a writer and probably so awesomely fun as a coworker!

Wow... that's one thing I never thought of. I ALWAYS did this when forced into ANY vehicle when I was growing up. LOL I had this cheap $15 walkman.... I still have it somewhere. I have literally counted the headlights on the highway innumerable times while listening to Tiny Dancer
