  • Just.. Wow... Stupidity at Wal-Mart

    I would have maimed her...

I received a call (and a photo taken by cell phone) last night regarding a particularly sucky/stupid customer at a Wally World.

My friend went in to pick up 3 items for a party he was throwing. Just three things. He's a fairly intelligent guy and says that what he saw hurt his brain. He went to the self checkout and only one was open at the time. It was in use by "what may possibly be the stupidest woman ever to step foot in Wal-Mart". (His words... I've seen worse.)

Her and her boyfriend were checking out. She would scan exactly two items and then place a third on the scanner while she waited for her boyfriend to take a bag off the rack, carefully open it and hold it out to her. She would put the two items into the bag, which he would then place gently into their cart. (We're talking clothes and such... no need for such care... really.) Of course while this was taking place the scanner would be busily scanning the item left upon it... 3 or 4 times. The lady would get this surprised look on her face and wave the CSR over to void out the extra scans... CSR would say, politely, "Ma'am, please don't leave an item on the scanner again..." SC would reply "But it only should have scanned once!"

Repeated several times until everything was rung up.....

And then... Oh good lord and lady... This particularly stupid excuse for an amoeba decided that she couldn't understand how to pay for her items!!!!!????!!!!???

CSR came over and just did it for this woman. I would have been singing this service personnel's praises and laying wreathes of laurels upon her noble brow. This did what most SC's do.... She blamed all her "wasted time" on the CSR since it was obviously not the moron's fault that she couldn't follow simple directions.

CSR apologized to my friend for the wait and asked if he would need any help.

My friend, being the cool person that he is, said "Nope. I, unlike others, actually use my brain. I'd have at least gotten a bit pissy at that cow. You were awesome."

People like that woman make me for the human race...

I've often said people who cannot handle being good customers (putting their unwanted items back in the correct place or at least asking an employee to do it, putting their shopping carts back in the corrals provided, not making a filthy mess of the restrooms) should be banished to doing their shopping at Wally World forever.

So where do they go if they can't even handle shopping at Wally World?

Oh, wow, kudos to the CSR for not snapping at that woman and being patient with someone who can't even figure out how to pay. I think the CSR should (probably couldn't) have suggested using a regular checkout lane the next time she is shopping there and well, from the looks of it she probably never shopped in her life much less use a self-checkout.

But, this doesn't just happen at Wally World. It happens at any store that offers a self check out. This is why Publix seems to be the only grocery store around that does not offer a self check out service. The majority of the customers that shop at many Publix stores are the oldie goldies who do nothing but bitch and complain about new technologies. Publix at least wised up and decided not to satisfy these people because it gives them one less thing to bitch about.

On the other hand, in other stores I shop in, like Home Depot, I have yet to encounter someone like this. However, I have encountered people who use those lines to buy items they really should be checking out with a real person. You can't scan a huge sheet of plywood and place it into a bag, nor can you place a tablesaw through and expect nothing to go wrong. You do have these people that try it, mainly because it's an open line, and mainly because there is a cashier on hand to help these people out. If it does not scan, they have their scanning gun ready.

I should point out the one time this man was buying bags of play sand for his kid's sandbox (which I absolutely forbid at my house). He scanned two bags of the five he had and tore open the edges of them because they were too large to fit through the scanner. He had actually forced them through and tore them.

Well, fast food for dinner, so no one really has to get out and help them, although God knows how many SCs go through a drive through and are dumb, and for things like TP and such, there's aways the news paper. Subscribe over the phone, take up two hours of someone's time for a life time subscription, and you're all set. Not the best, but who needs all that fancy two-ply stuff anyway?

Give your friend a big Thank You from CS for being so nice to the clerk. After dealing with the Dimwitted Duo, she needed a kind word from an understanding customer.

This is the reason for my avatar I love my new avatar!

By the way I just do NOT get how it is so hard to use the self-scanner. I usually do it b/c it's quicker and if my total starts to go over what I thought and I can't afford the rest of the items in the cart, I have control over that...... (and no I don't leave the frozen food on teh self-scanner for someone else - I always take it up to the cashier - and No it's not a cartload full of stuff)

The only times I ever struggle is when the scanner has something a bit wet - probably someone's frozen food that melted a bit and the condensation is on the scanner - or when the scanner isn't really working and every time you scan something it tells you to "wait for a cashier".....

Wow that's just retarded, although I've seen plenty of people bewildered by self scans.

I also hate it when people bring full carts thru the self-scans, which really holds things up. I use them too, but only if I have a few items. When I go for my full, bi-weekly grocery runs, I use a regular checkout.

Recently, I saw something at the self-scans that really rubbed me the wrong way. "If you would prefer to have the cashier scan your items, please tell us."

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't that what the regular checkouts are for? I would so love to change the sign to something like, "If you would prefer to have the cashier scan your items, STAY THE FUCK OFF THE SELF-SCANS, DUMBASS!"

Yes, that aggravates me, too. I've seen some people use those because damn them if they're going to wait in a regular line with a zillion items in their carts. It says SELF CHECK OUT for a reason, but much of the time, these check outs have fewer people at them, making it where some scheming nobody will try to outfox everyone else.

No kidding! The whole point behind a Self-Scan is to SCAN it yourSELF. Hence the name. If you can't figure out the Self-Scan, go to the regular register and quit holding up the line for the rest of us!

                            Scan item
                            Put in bag
Lather rinse repeat until all items are bagged
                            Select payment
If cash, put money in machine like you would a vending machine
I credit/debit swipe card like you would an atm
Not that hard! But apparently there is a law of the universe that dictates if more than two items are in a bag at a time AND you take responsibility for your mistakes, all existence ends.
Pretend there's something here that sounds insightful, but is really just some pseudo-intellectual bull.
