  • They've closed down you idiots!!

A toy store in my town has recently closed down and relocated to another town about twenty miles away. The shop has been closed down for a couple of weeks now, there are signs on all the windows, saying "CLOSED DOWN: RELOCATED TO <LOCATION>", the store is completely empty, no shelves, no stock, nothing.

So I'm walking past the store, and I see a really confused family standing outside the store. The parents are chapping on the stores window, while their children stand, looking bored.

Father: They're usually open at this time!
Mother: Hello? Anyone in there? *bangs on window*

    OK, so they missed:

    1. The locked door.
    2. The sign saying "CLOSED DOWN"
    3. The complete lack of staff, stock or furniture

I must admit, I did this once. There's an Original Pancake house some ways away. I go maybe once a month. Parked one day, went up while concentrating on the notebook I'd brought with, walked in... into an empty room. Tables, register, all gone. They'd even taken up the tiling and wallpaper. But someone must've forgotten to lock the door. I sheepishly backed out and went to get a taco.

Exactly. You looked up, saw it was empty, and left.

That family just kept banging on the windows--which are SEETHROUGHT last time I checked--of a dead, deserted, empty store.

        Cue the zombies.

Reading this caused an old story to surface from the Memory Vault (I know that's a mixed metaphor, so sue me!)

This happened when I was still in college, at least 25 years ago in other words.

I went to my favorite coffee joint in town for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. This particular coffee shop happened to be next door to a vacant gas station that had been out of business for a long time. So while I was there enjoying hot liquid goodness, I see this idiot drive into the gas station and attempt to fill up. When the pump didn't work he started slapping it on the side, then on the front, then on the side again. When that didn't work he walked up to the building, tried to open the door, which was locked of course, then yanked on it again several times, and when the door refused to open, he started pounding on it and yelling, and looking through the glass, all the while failing to see the giant "Out of business" sign on the front of the building.

All that would have been dumb enough. But did it stop there? No.

After several minutes of fruitless attempts to make the universe bend to his will, he walked over to the coffee shop where I was sitting, and started yelling at the coffee girl (this was before we started calling them "baristas"). Apparently he thought that because they were next door, they could somehow force the owner of the defunct gas station to come down and open it up so he could fill up his tank. The coffee girl reasonably asked why he thought they would have anything to do with it, and he replied, "Well, this sure doesn't make your business look good."

          Ah, college. Good times!
          "Wouldn't that be unethical?"
"That's only an issue for those who aren't already in Hell."
