And WHY would waste another second of my life on you?
Whenever I've applied for jobs and not used an agency, I just apply for everything that sounds even vaguely like what I could do. Sometimes I hear back and other times I don't. By the time I hear back on some jobs, I've forgotten what they were.
I've even applied for jobs I don't really want to do, but I was in a good mood that day and decided I'd be magnanimous and try and do the job if they accepted me.
Still, if I was in his position I would just make an appointment for an interview and see what happens. I would never ask the person on the phone to rummage through resumes to see what I've applied for.
It might be helpful for you and for the person that calls you if you keep a list of what you've applied for.... that way if someone calls back and you don't remember what you applied for, instead of asking the stupid question "uh yeah what did I apply for", you could refer to your list. Just an idea. I'd feel pretty stupid asking what I applied for - unless I applied for several jobs at the same company and asked which one they were calling me back for - that's just me though
Oh - I didn't even get STARTED on the temps who DIDN'T have degrees... it's amaing that some people manage to keep themselves ALIVE.
I do not know how I should take that. I have a high school degree, but no college degree's. Just because someone doesn't have a degree in something, doesn't mean that they cannot do the job. That is one thing that I hate about any company. Yeah they want the best, but the best person for the job, might be the one that they turned down because they didn't have an degree.

I think what Bannedanna meant was how the people who applied who did have degrees ended up being dumber than a dead dog, then to imagine what the ones who didn't have edumacation looked like.
Nothing to do with actual, intelligent people like you.

I have to add to this, that I'm currently doing very well in a job my degree has nothing to do with. I got my degree in something I was interested in (zoology), thinking I'd get a job in the field or go to vet school, but ended up in a call center because the pay and benefits were good. I'm now applying for a sales associate position, and may beat out people with business/finance degrees.
I have a lot of friends who do not have their degrees, or are still working on degrees, but are probably as smart or even smarter than me. It's not always a gauge of your intelligence, but often of your ability to pay for school, or a reflection of your life (as in: you have to work to pay for school but can't do both at the same time and keep up). And it so often turns into a vicious cycle where you can't get a job without a degree, but you can't get a degree if you're making minimum wage at a dead end job. And thus ends my rant, and trust that I'm not speaking on anyone's behalf, so don't yell at me.

Sad thing is, I know if/when I leave where I'm at I won't be able to get as high a position as I have now because I have an Associates Degree. No bachelor's.

Isn't that the dumbest thing? I'm actually talking about the same thing on another board. Spend $100,000 = $30,000 paying job and this makes sense HOW? You spend $100,000 on a pretty piece of paper? True, there are some people that really do learn important things in college - but there's a bunch of crap there too. Life experience? Please. I went through having a roommate, not having a roommate, being on a large campus, being on a tiny campus, living in an apartment on my own - I got plenty of life experience, but I'm pretty sure I could've done that a lot cheaper. I don't have a degree b/c I couldn't choose what I wanted to do - and all of my friends who were graduating weren't able to get jobs in their professions - one person I knew graduated w/ a Spanish degree and she was working at Qdoba..... I guess she was "using" some of her degree there - but you can certainly get that kind of job w/out a degree. So to JUST get a Degree in something - I felt like I was wasting time & money.....
Now that i have some clue of what I would like to do - money's run out. I would LOVE to get some training in areas I'm interested in - but skip the psychology, sociology, computer basics, earth science crap that they make you take too so you're "well rounded". For crying out loud - I took that stuff for 12 years in school - I get it - I'm well rounded. If I was interested in taking more classes in those subjects - I'd do it voluntarily - not b/c I have to meet some "minimum requirements" of education. Even the trade schools though have become incredibly expensive - with no promise of a high paying job afterwards. It seems really backwards and messed up to me.
Can we go back to when college was free and paid for with taxes? That anyone who wanted to get a higher education could? At least I think that's how it used to be.... that was a really long time ago....... (when the first colleges popped up in the U.S.)
College has NEVER been government-provided.... at least not in Canada (and I really doubt it was in the US). I'm currently trying to save up the $600 I need for the next course in my BA program, because I can't support my kids on a student loan, so I can only do school part-time through distance education. $600 may not sound like a lot, but it's a LOT more than I can spare *sigh* I want to get a degree so I can get a better paying job, but my job doesn't pay enough for me to be able to get a degree. Lovely catch-22, isn't it?
I have an English degree and I've spent the better part of the last 10 years working for a bookstore. I guess that's related but not quite what I had in mind...

*waves* Degrees or the lack there of irks me to no end. For various reasons, I only have my associates in finance and am 13 credits shy of my bachelors.
I applied and was very qualified for an analyst job at a nice company here. All three people I interviewed with (and would be working with) loved me and the fact that I love working with excel and numbers. Oh and the fact you can shove me in the corner and just let me work helps to some degree. They were ready to hire me right there but of course, had to pass it through the VP for the official ok. Want to guess who never heard anything back? He took one look at my resume and chucked it into file 13. Didn't want to take the time to even talk with someone perfectly qualified in all ways but missing that one piece of paper.
As for the temp thing, I've been told time over time from clients that they were amazed that I knew how to do things that they were looking for. I'm not sure if it's because temps get a bad rap or because I look a tad um, alternative, but it's always been a nice honor. Now, if I could make their HR's see that fact. Such is job hunting for a freak eh? (Yes I know that's another rant for another topic, sorry.)

I did that when I was job hunting, long long ago.
I'd go through the paper on Sunday, write down every ad that I had a chance of landing in an organized list, then when Monday rolled around, I'd start calling. Not only could anyone who would give me grief about not having a job see that I was sincerely looking, but I never had to ask beyond a company name to know who was calling me back. Plus, I knew when the same company had a half dozen ads and I wouldn't waste my time calling past the first time.

When I worked at Hastings, we had a customer who was rather notorious for having been a jerk on at least two occasions that I can recall. Once, he came in and confronted us because a number of CDs that he claimed to have been stolen from him showed up in our Used CDs. The CDs in question were all quite generic pop and were not marked or identified in any way. So he couldn't prove that they were his, ergo he couldn't prove that we'd bought stolen property. Since we informed him of this fact and reminded him that our CD buyback policy required us to get ID (something which usually scares off people with hot product to unload) and there was nothing more we could do for him, he really gave us an arse-ache over the whole thing. For several weeks. Every time he'd come in the store, he'd ask for the MOD and rehash the drama.
On another occasion, I asked him to please cease reading the Playgirl magazine that he was quite blatantly standing there and reading. The porn mags were all greenbagged, and there were signs everywhere telling people not to read the mags in the store. He claimed it was already open, and I smiled and indicated that the sign said "do not READ." He scribbled off a nasty personal comment about me on the "Customer Feedback" pad mounted just in front of the exit door. Normally I probably wouldn't have even bothered him, but it was in the under-5-minutes till closing time and he was one of the stragglers.
This young man came in following both of these occasions and attempted to get a job. It was all we could do not to laugh outright at him.
He loves the world...except for all the people.

Hmm maybe he was looking to get a job so he could look through the magazines all he wanted, hmm?? Or he could "watch" for his stolen merchandise??? What a crazy! LOL
