Here's a quickie. My wife called in a pizza from Pizza Hut, and went in to pick it up. (We're not in any delivery area.) We've ordered from this place before. So, she gets there, they bring the pizza, they run our debit card and she gets the slip. So my wife signs it, but the girl at the register pipes up, "You have to total it! And you know you have to leave a tip!"

    For takeout?

My wife did anyways just to get out of there, but at my urging she called and asked to speak with the manager. Not in SC style, but simply like this:

"Yes, may I please speak with the manager?"

    Manager comes on..
M: "This is <name>, can I help you?"
MW: "Yes, I just came in a little while ago to pick up a pizza and I didn't like the treatment I received."
    M: "Oh?"
MW: "Yes, when the girl gave me my credit slip, she insisted I leave a tip and it was for take out."
M: "A tip? For takeout!? What was the name on the order?"
    Wife gives name
M: "I'll take care of this."
    MW: "Thank you."

And that was that. I just couldn't believe that the girl was so insistent on a tip, when it was a takeout pizza. I could understand if it was delivery, or if it was in-house service, but for takeout!? I just couldn't believe it.
A fact of life: After Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says W T F.....

ITA completely, even if it was for takeout or delivery ..no one has a right to demand a tip from someone.

I agree as well. No one had to deliver it to your place, since you aren't in the delivery area, and it was just a pizza. It's their jobs in which they earn their hourly wage to MAKE pizzas. You also didn't dine in and you didn't require to be waited on.

Just picking up a damn pizza that was their job to make, and the girl whines that you need to give a tip?

Well even if you had ever planned on leaving a tip, if an employee is going to be insistant and whiny like that about it, forget it.

TIP is an acronym that means "To Insure Promptness". It was never meant to be FORCED! So if you wanna give a Tip then that's fine but if you don't that's fine too. Back in my waitressing days, I've had people who didn't give a Tip at all. Did I throw a hissy fit? Nope. There's more important things to be concerned with.
Yeah, I understand that there are people who depend on tips for a living but to think that everybody is gonna leave a tip is not realistic. It's a crock I know but that's life.

It's cool if someone wants to tip for takeout, but an employee demanding a tip is unprofessional at best IMO.

Whisky tango foxtrot??! Maybe if she had been a little nicer, she would get some tips, like I would sometimes if I worked counter. That's why counter people are paid more than servers or delivery people, because tips aren't expected.

Igloo-Delta-Kilo why some people get like that, but apparently the saying about flies, honey, and vinegar keeps getting repeated because SOME people don't have a ING clue!

Also, I heard it as 'TIPS: To Insure Proper Service', but that was probably someone guessing in the dark.

I can't wait to see this one laid to rest permanently. It's not true.

When I was at the cafe, tips for takeout were a nice surprise, but completely unnecessary. But even for full table service, I wouldn't have dreamed of demanding a tip. Its just rude.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

I'll tip for takeout at a place that is normally a sit-down resturant and is not one that offers delivery. I will not tip at a place that much of their buisness (or all of it) does not take place in their store, ie takeout/delivery is the norm if I am picking it up myself. Part of the job there is getting the pizza ready for shipment, but that is not a typical thing (%wise) at a place like Applebees or such where you are possibly taking the server away from her other tables in order to package up your food.

The only time I usually tip for takeout is if it's someplace like Applebees where they actually walk it out to your car while you wait. I figure if they are going to walk it to me, then I can give them a tip. Granted, it's not a full 15% tip for a takeout order that usually takes less than two minutes from start to finish for them to bring to me, take payment, and me pull away. But I usually give at least 10%.

If it's a place where I walk in and just pay a cashier, though, I don't tip.

That's an urban legend, actually... in that context "Ensure" would be correct. Insure doesn't mean the same thing. "Ensure" means to ascertain. "Insure" means to protect AGAINST. Just a little grammar/usage lesson to start the day.

sorry Boozy, I hadn't read your response yet.
