(hope serious not sarcasm) From NCIS. Somebody has a quote from it on their sig. He smacks people on the back of the head a lot. Although I love that show, I don't particularly care for that habit of his. It's one of those things that most people find endearing and I think is annoying, and I get those "you're too serious" looks. *sigh*

Actually, in the last like 3 or 4 seasons they cut way back on the Gibbs Slap. Usually to Tony when Tony is being particulary obnoxious or dense.

True enough. With the rest of Team Gibbs getting savvy to the fact that Gibbs is always right behind them, the fear of the Gibbs Slap-- and really, just the presence of the Gibbs Death Glare-- is enough to keep them in line.

I read somewhere that the Gibbs slap originally started in the 1st season. It was just something that Mark Harmon came up with. They liked it and kept it. I just recently started watching NCIS from the beginning on Netflix. We had originally started watching it later on.

It seems to me that Tony's been the main recipient of the Gibbs slap from the beginning. Although one memorable non-Tony Gibbs slap was when he gave one to Jimmy a couple of years ago when Jimmy basically did the human version of the BSOD when he found out his wife had gone into labor, so in that case, the Gibbs slap was more like a system reboot.

Do they have the whole thing without skipping episodes[some series they skip episodes, like Mythbusters ( ] I need to do some binge watching, though before the fire I had the first 6 seasons.

Would be interesting if they got a new member of the team - a Marine combat veteran (has to be a Marine - after all, the Corps is part of the Department of the Navy, and it's NCIS, not ACIS) who went to college on the GI Bill. Combat veterans DO NOT take it very well if someone hits them from behind - survival instincts come into play. I've heard of a case where a recently-discharged veteran was staying at his mother's mobile home. No second bedroom, so he was sleeping on the living room floor. Middle of the night, his mother had to get to the other end of the trailer, so she stepped over him. Fortunately he realized he was back on "civvy street" before he inflicted any permanent injury.

Being an ex-Marine himself, I'm sure Gibbs would account for that!

What rather amused me about Tony's Gibbs slaps was that every so often he'd Gibbs slap himself if he thought he deserved it!

Also, Food Lady, the Gibbs slap did get brought up in an HR meeting once, and the HR lady very firmly stated that 1) slapping someone counted as abuse and should be reported and 2) hugs counted as sexual harassment. Gibbs ignored it and Abby went into a tailspin over whether she'd been forcing hugs on everyone before she was talked down from the mental ledge and told that hugs would always be welcome from her.

I know she annoys some people, but I used to know a few people rather like her when I was part of the Goth scene so she's the tv character equivalent of comfort food for me. I miss having purple hair...

It was used as a system reboot for Gibbs, too, after he got amnesia and forgot something like the last 12 years and thought he was still in the Marines. Ziva finally got him to remember everything when she took his hand and made him Gibbs-slap her.

Most often quoted by DiNozzo, but IIRC McGee has also echoed that line on occasion as well.

As far as the Gibbs Slap goes, more often that not, that's usually DiNozzo but I think McGee's gotten that before (around season 2 or 3 I think.) With McGeek, though, he usually received the "Get To The Point" look from Gibbs whenever he's explaining something techy that's way over Gibbs' head.
