I luck out genetics wise. From some part of my heritage, possibly the Maori side, when summer hits I spend one day out and go a nice olive-tan instantly, no burn. Mum hates it, she spends all summer trying to tan (safely, sun screen etc) and for me its just *poof* done.

Even so, I don't risk it and wear sun screen anyway. Not to mention NZ is under the hole in the Ozone layer I think.

I'm a very light skinned redhead, and I tend to wear tons of sunscreen. I also have a long-sleeved T-shirt with a high neck and some pants made out of jersey that I bring out when I'm going to be in the sun, and a wide-brimmed hat. Know where I got sunburned the last time I got sunburned? On the backs of my hands. Turtleguy is bald on top, so he's careful to always wear a hat. He says one of the worst sunburns he ever got was once when he was in the military, and he had to be outside but not wearing a hat. (I don't remember why.) He said it was miserable, wearing a hat after that.

I get some good-natured ribbing for commuting with a rolling carry-on. If I get caught in a downpour I have a rain slicker, extra socks, and an umbrella with me. Plus my neck doesn't hurt from hauling all that around in a big purse.

I always walk around with a backpack...it contains my mini-umbrella, an extra pair of reading glasses, whatever book I'm currently working on, and several reusable bags if whatever I buy during my walk is too big to fit in the backpack with the rest.

Back when I was in college the last time I carried around a FULL racked backpack. All my books + supplies + raingear + snacks + whatever else I needed.

There was one or two professional white collar jobs that I carried the same backpack to and from work as I had an hour long train ride then a 3/4 mile walk to my office. had some work stuff, raingear/mini-umbrella, a couple of library books, cigarettes in a plastic pouch extra lighters/matches, water or soda for the walk/train ride. Heck I even carried home a dot-matrix printer I had deliver to a store near my home.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

My sister (we're full blooded) is pale to the extreme. She used to bully me about my dark skin when we were little.
But now I've got the last laugh because unless she puts on sunscreen 50 her skin burns peels, and blisters. She almost never does on her face, so during the summer she turns tomato red and has to cover it with lots of makeup.
If I put on sunscreen, my skin might burn but doesn't peel or blister.
I might feel sorry for her if she hadn't bullied me.

While I wouldn't make fun of anyone wearing a hat and long sleeves, I have to admit... I would not be able to resist the sun. I really enjoy living in clouds and rain, but I do 100% appreciate some sunshine. I'd put on sunscreen, though I know I'd probably get a little burn. Still, unless it was terribly hot and miserable, I'd be in a tank and shorts.

Hotel Minion, I know there's a long history of people being mean to other people about skin color, but I just don't get it! Honestly, my light skin is not super pretty, especially my legs. My legs are just veins. It's horrible. Little spider veins, big bulging veins. Oh, let's not forget little scars from ingrown hairs, since everyone is so insistent that body hair is gross and let's face it, my legs are gross enough without bringing even more attention to them. I would love having a darker complexion to cover them up.

This is why people in the middle-east are covered head to toe. They go one better even and cover their faces too.

Personally, I'd be the one wearing nothing but a tank top and shorts with no sunscreen... and I wouldn't burn. I never burn anymore, I think it's partly my lifestyle but also diet related. A bit curious.
