  • Delusional woman at express line

I was sharing a story I read here to my mom, and she shared a story that happened to her at a supermarket once. My mom went through the express line with about 2 items and she noticed the woman ahead of her had at least 30 items more than the 10 item limit for the express line. This is my mom's pet peeve. So, being the confrontational person she is she decided to say something.

    M: My mom
    CL: Crazy lady

M: Excuse me, but you have more than ten items.
CL: Well, if you're in such a hurry you should have come earlier. ( )
M: It's an express line! But it doesn't matter because I'm going ahead of you.
    She does.
CL: Having a bad day, dear?
M: No, not at all, as long as I'm ahead of you and not behind you.
CL: *puts hand on my mom's arm, and if I'd have been there, this is the moment I would have started taping*
M: Touch me again and you'll pull back a bloody stump.
That was pretty much the end of the confrontation, and while I always think my mom can be a bit SC herself at times, I can't help but be totally mindblown by this woman's conceit. She told my mom she should have come earlier. Earlier than what? Earlier when CL wasn't there? Apparently she feels the entire planet should fit it's schedule around her activities. My mom never met this woman before but apparently that's no excuse.

Double point for your mom. She went to the fancy school, where they teach yall how to read letters and numbers.
Now would be a good time to visit So Very Unofficial!

yeah, the woman was a SC for having 30 items in the express lane and being so damned nonchalant about it when she's called on it.

and while your mom may be better than that, she's not much better.

maybe in canada you can get away with cutting in line like that, but in the US that's a risky move quite likely to trigger a really nasty encounter/backlash. i'd never do it.

I've got to agree with Auto... while your mom was entitled to feel annoyed and confront the other lady, she had no right to cut ahead.

I'm always in a hurry to get out of the grocery store, but its never because I'm running out of time. Its because no one in their right mind wants to stand in a frickin' checkout line for more than a few minutes if at all possible.

If the store's just flat-out busy, fine. That's my fault for shopping on a Saturday morning. But if its because some woman has decided to checkout through the express line with 30 items, that's NOT my fault, and I'd be annoyed, too.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

Exactly. There is seldom* a good reason to take that many items into an express line.

*I say seldom, because as I've mentioned before, I had supervisory permission to take a couple dozen items through the express lane. I still felt guilty, though.

I dunno. The woman had thirty items in the EXPRESS lane. Thats 10 or less, no? As far as I'm concerned, she was asking for trouble, and she got it. If someone tried to do the same thing with me, I would also point out to them that they are in the wrong lane, and if they persist, I would cut in front of them. People like that only get away with it because others allow them to.

Yeah, my mom is constantly embarrassing me. Some years ago she apparently decided she was never going to take any crap anymore. She's not a sucky customer in the way that she tries to get things for free, or act like she's entitled to the whole world, but if you break the rules in front of her, and disadvantage her, she's going to let you know. Doesn't make me any less embarrassed though. Once the woman touched her though, all bets were off.

Exactly what I was gonna say. The woman counted on everyone else being too polite to confront her. She counted wrong.

JMO but another customer shouldn't get to tell a fellow shopper they are cutting in front of them because they have too many items. It's a different story if the cashier tells the person they have too many items and they have to move.

                    JMO of course

Well, if the cashier does that, the 30 item lady might to go the supervisor.... And we've all heard how wonderful management is at backing up their cashiers.... Now excuse me while I get a bucket for my dripping sarcasm.

Most will overlook one or two over. It's when people deliberately or carelessly abuse the slow lane (a more proper term for ours) is when there's a problem.

Why does management suck up to SC's like that??? That was the point I was trying to make in post I made about the Mother's Day brawl at the Golden Corral in Toledo. You let one SC piss off another customer just to keep the SC happy. Yeah well what if tempers flare to the point you end up with a fight/brawl and the police are forced to evacuate the entire store and shut it down???? They're sure as hell NOT going to just idly stand by and allow civil unrest to reign in the name of profits. And then the company is forced to lose a buttload of money in lost sales and can even be sued for not trying to diffuse the situation in the first place. Of course all this would not happen if management would step up and get in the middle and prevent it from happening in the first place.

You know, most places, such as the grocery chain I worked at, would not allow the cashier (aka ME) to kick out those with more than x amount of items.

Believe me, SC's would take advantage of this.

While technically your Mom may have not been 100% in the right to cut ahead, I give her props, cause I loved it when good customers like her enforced the policies we were not able to.
