  • The pub is empty!

So, as mentioned, my in-laws came down for Mother's day. We're quite lucky in that we live about 15 mins drive away from a casino that happens to have a very very nice bird garden, so we took them there for Mothers day. It was lovely! The weather was perfect, we caught the bird show, the fruit bats were active (I LOVE bats!), and Mom in Law (MiL) and Dad in Law (DiL) had a jolly good time.

We were rather parched after 3 hours of wandering around outside, so we popped into a pub for a drink. Granted, it was Mother's day, but it was E-M-P-T-Y. No waiters to greet us, no hostess, nothing. We walked in and showed ourselves to a table outside and sat. And sat. And sat some more. After 10 minutes, with waiters walking past us avoiding all eye-contact, I got up, and accosted a group of waiters inside that were leaning against a wall and shooting the breeze.

I politely pointed out that we had been there for 10 minutes, and no-one had even sneezed on us, let alone given us menus. They assured me that someone would attend to us shortly.

Another 10 minutes went by, and nothing. Obviously we were irritated by now, and grousing quite loudly. A lady that I would assume was the hostess walked past, heard us muttering (by that point I was about to get up again and lead a waiter by the hand to our table) and she organised menus for us.

We were going to order food, but we decided against it - just as well as our drinks took 15 minutes to get to us. Our drink order? One draught, and 5 sodas. Not fresh squeezed juice, or lattes or shakes. Something that could take max 5 minutes. (any servers out there - if I'm wrong, please tell me!)

I had to hunt down the server to get our bill, and hunt her down again to pay the bill. Of course, there was NO tip. Normally I give at the very least 5% tip, but we were kept waiting for 20 minutes, our drinks took too long and the server basically ignored us. I didn't bother complaining, but we did decide not to darken their doorway again. We should have realised they were almost empty for a reason, so it is partially our own fault.

You know, if I had been in that situation, I would be very sorely tempted to just walk out.

It's not like anyone was paying attention.

Yeah, we were very tempted, but MiL was exhausted and thirsty, and needed to sit for a while. On the bright side, we got to go through the pictures taken on the digicams while we were waiting.

We had a situation like that at the place I refer to as "Raw Chicken Surprise." Decided to give them one last chance, which they blew.

It took forever for a waitress to show up, and even longer for our food to arrive, despite the place being dead. And then half of it was wrong anyway. We didn't care at that point, we were starving, and just wanted to eat and get out of there.

We have not been back since.

That happened me & an ex of mine once. We were waiting about 10 minutes to be seated, while there was about one family in there. We did not complain about that, since it looked like they were short on staff. Once we got seated, we had to wait for another 10 minutes to just to get our drinks taken. It took about 15 minutes for the waitress to come back and take our orders. The food was taking longer then 15 minutes, and they had 3 cooks in the back. All we ordered was 2 sodas, and 2 sandwiches. The waitress was mad because we did not leave a tip.

We had something similar happen to my family at Old Spaghetti Factory a few weeks ago, but it really wasn't the waitress's fault. she'd only been working there a few days and the stupid manager put us, a 14 top, on her. She was also helping with an even larger group in the same room as us.

Poor thing, I could tell she was getting flustered trying to remember drinks for everyone, she screwed up a few orders, dropped a plate, etc.
We still tipped her pretty well, because frankly she shouldn't have had such a big table to herself when she was so new. We also tried to be a really fun table for her. We left pretty late and I didn't see the manager, or else I would have told him what a dingbat he was for doing that to her.

              I have an idea

I hate it when restaurants are like that. I have had it happen to me a few times.
Lets send all the SC's to the casino near to Iradney, so they will have a legitimate reason to complain about the service and claim a discount or get the meal for free.

We could make up a 10% discount card and give it to all unreasonable customers.

Yeah, that's different. We had a situation like that at a local Pizza Hut a few years back. It was on New Years Eve, and we were getting some dinner before we dropped my son off at his grandma's, and headed over to the party where we were invited.

We got there, and the place was packed, and only one woman working all the tables and the register, and running around like the proverbial chicken with its head cut off. She took a second to apologize for the wait, and to let us know she'd be with us just as soon as she could.

When she finally got us seated, she just looked at us sadly and asked, "You're not going to yell at me, are you?" After chatting with her, we found out that her manager, in his infinite wisdom scheduled only her and one other person, who was in the back making all the pizzas, because he figured it would be dead.

At one point, I overheard a conversation between her and the cook that they were almost out of pizza dough, so they'd have to close early. Must have been really busy for that to happen.

It took awhile to get our food, but under the circumstances, we understood. We felt so bad for her, I think we left something like a 50% tip.

Ugh I hate when stuff like that happens - a completely dead restaurant and 10 waiters/waitresses/ other staff just sitting around doing absolutely nothing..... serve the customers, get them out, and THEN get back to your oh so important conversation. It won't take that long.

The worst waitress I ever got was in PA. Some friends and I went to a little restaurant imbetween our break between shows (we were in theatre school). We told the waitress that we were in a hurry, would be ready to order in just a moment, and would like our checks with our food. We were sat upstairs, completely forgot about, put in our order, repeated that we were in a hurry and would like our checks with our food - and that we needed seperate checks. Guess who screwed just about everything up?? And our food took so long that I finally went to the waitress and just asked if she could box it up for us.... she brought us boxes - and THEN brought the food..... meaning we had to box it ourselves, which took longer, and gave her more time to disappear and not come back with our checks, which she was supposed to deliver with the food. Then she finally came to the table and asked if "everything was okay". No. It wasn't. We told her we needed check. - She didn't have it seperated out. So then we stood there while she seperated it - and unfortunately, not too many of us were carrying cash, so we had to pay w/ plastic - which took her forever. I don't think we left much of a tip.... if we left one at all. We ended up being late getting back (got in trouble) and had to try to eat our food in under a minute...... oh yeah and the restaurant was NOT that busy.

Ooh the other one was when my mom and I ordered two take-out salads from Applebees. We waited and waited and waited and waited.....about 30 minutes later I walked in pretty pissed. I don't even remember if we got our salads. I just know I avoided Applebees for a looooong time after that. I think that was the third time they'd taken an outrageous amount of time to prepare food - it was two salads w/ a stupid chicken breast thrown on top - which was probably pre-cooked and just had to be plopped on..... anyway, it's still not my fav. restaurant.
