If I'm disappointed because no punches were thrown, does that make me a horrible person?
No, I was hoping for just that. *shrug* It's the evil in me.

At the self check-outs here, it's usually four scanners all facing each other with the cashier in the middle at his/her terminal. It's almost always one line. (this applies to Loblaws, IGA, Walmart, and any other self-checkout store I've been to... there aren't that many).

At my local HD, they've put a display rack inbetween the two sets of self-scan checkouts, so you're forced to form two lines.
This one has 4 u-scan units and the line seems to form haphazardly on the center near a large candy display. The units are very widely spaced apart to allow for the large items that people get at HD.

Forming one line and the next person going to the available register is actually much much faster believe it or not. Then the shopper can go to the next available register immediately, instead of being stuck on one of several individual lines where other customers are having check issues, coupons issues, or what have you.

People get snarly with the other customers at my place mostly on Sundays. The few times I work Sundays there is at least one instance a day of teeth baring and the cold cutting words along the lines of: The line is HERE! It's somewhat contained as the store is full of 4 year olds - but the underlying tension is there.

I make attempts to get people to form one line, especially when I am the only cashier. Plopping your stuff 3 registers down on an unoccupied register tells me you are stepping out of line and then need to go back to the back of the line. Those conversations are fun.
If you are thinking to yourself, "Hmmm, should I post this?" it should probably go HERE.
