  • Another cell phone story

Reading the thread about kids and cell phones reminded me about something that happened a year or two ago.

My wife and I went out to see a play (live theater is one of my favorite things in the world!). I don't remember which play it was now, but I only remember that in the middle, somebody's cell phone rang.

OK, it happens. People forget to turn the damn things off. I've been guilty of that a couple of times myself. But when it happens, most people will have the decency to just turn them off quickly.

Not this guy. He answered it! Then proceeded to carry on a conversation in a normal tone of voice! He was in some kind of business, and was taking an order from a client! It was unbelievable.

People all over the theater, including the actors, were shooting him death-ray glances, but he was totally oblivious to everything that was going on around him, until someone (maybe it was the theater manager, I don't know) walked up to him, snatched the phone from his hand, whispered something to him (I didn't hear what it was, but I hope it was something along the lines of "This isn't your fucking living room" which is what I would have said), and escorted him out of the theater. A few people nearby applauded.

Things like this make me want to reconsider my position on capital punishment.

I swear, is it just me? Did people go around a few years back and just start smacking folks in the head with the 'lack of common sense and courtesy' bat, and somehow they just missed me (and the fine folks on this board, of course ).

I mean, seriously...how do you DO something like that??

I really annoy my family at plays and movies (i loves live theature too btw) i stick my sell phone in the convenant girl hiding place, only if im epecting a call, and if it vibrates, yes its on vibrate, i get up and leave the theatur to answer it.

It annoys them because they see me reach down the front of my shirt, look at the screen and put it back if its not the call im wait for when it vibrates....

Yeah, me too. I wouldn't have though of anywhere else, unless you were planning to smuggle diamonds across the border.

Durned movie talkers and cellphones. I try and go to movies weeks after they open so I won't have to sit with a crowd.

Here's a little tale of justice. Where I'm from, usually the theatre's pretty quiet. The occasional talky kid, but the parent usually hushes them. But when I go to a theatre in the city (Atlanta), there's jabbering idiots everywhere. I assumed it was a city thing. So when I went to a movie in NYC, I was really worried that the crowd might get raucous.

It was pretty quiet, actually, until about a third through. Then someone's cellphone went off, and he answered it, and starting talking loudly. In unison, everyone within twenty feet stood up and pelted him with their food. He fled the theatre under a hail of popcorn and slushie.

Sometimes I say to people, "If those kids are noisy, let us know and well throw them out."

Maybe I should tell them to throw popcorn!

Last time I was at a Youth Specialties conference, during the opening session, we were told to keep cell phones off while in the ballroom because the signals interfere with the production equipment. We were also told if someone happens to forget to turn off their phone, no big deal, things like this happen. But if they answer it and start talking, we were to "smite them, in the name of the Lord."

My theatre has included in our pre-show announcement for musicals that if a phone rings and the pit recognizes the ring-tone they will play along with it.
