The cops wouldn't be able to catch you or run you off the road if your car had a moving and flashing red light on the front.

I meant a laser pointer type light. In response to Swordsman's post about guns. Get it? Does anyone get it? Or am I the only one making obscure jokes and looking like an idiot?

Don't be sad, I got it, even before you explained . I even smiled a little.

        I got it

Yesterday I had the flip side of these scenarios. I was trying to get to my credit union office, which is open until 6 on Fridays, and which is about a 40 minute drive from work (I really need to move my accounts to a regular bank with a branch on every corner . I have direct deposit so I don't need to go there very often but I had to cash a couple other checks.). I'm cruising along on one road, at the 50mph speed limit, with no one behind me, when a car coming from a side road pulls out in front of me and I had to slam on the brakes, from 50 to about 35 real quick (if she had waited 5 seconds for me to pass her she would have had all the room in the world). Then she proceeds to go 40mph for the next 2 or 3 miles. GAH! Then we get to a light and she has to turn left with me, and that road's limit is 40mph, so she proceeds to go 30-35. I was really really trying not to tailgate, all the while trying not to slow down so much that the car that had come up behind me would be tailgating me...I hate being stuck in the middle like that...

No one messes with me, and those who do are left with blas karma that will make them shit themselves.

I race 4 wheelers and snowmobiles, you can bet your hiney I can handle a car in every instance.

Anytime some jackass cuts me off or tailgates me, they get the VIP blas treatment.

I may be a beautiful little blonde, but I know all about speed, agility, and stunts. Don't fuck with me on the road. You will LOSE. And I don't care how much bigger your vehicle is, you'll still lose.

Oy, I've been on both sides of situations like this lately.

Following my mom on our way out to lunch the other day, I watched a woman in a minivan driving behind me, going under the SL and falling back a couple car lengths. We pull up to the light, where it opens to 3 lanes for a short time, and she gets over in the far right lane, speeds up a little, cuts my mom off, then slows back down and begins driving like the most nervous driver I've ever seen.

On the other hand, I get pissy when people tailgate me. I'm the type that I do speed, but I do not tailgate. If you're going way under the limit, I'll get close enough to let you know I'm not please, but then I back off. If someone wants to go slow, they're going to go slow regardless.

My mom is actually afraid I'm going to wreck my car one of these days--I always slow down when people tailgate me--I'll usually slow down to the exact speed limit, then switch on the cruise control and let them suffer. I usually have to fight the urge to pretend I saw a wild animal in the road and slam on the brakes, just to see if they hit me.

I do that too. If the speed limit isn't fast enough for you, well, sorry! Especially if it's on a 65mph road. I will speed somewhat, but the higher the limit, the closer I stick to it. I don't need to be going 90 miles an hour, thank you very much. Usually I stay around 5 miles over the limit at lower speeds, depending on the road and the weather. I am also not above a small "brake check" but I only do that on dry roads with good visibility. I've been tempted to slam the brakes and let someone hit me but then my car ends up in the shop getting a new bumper and last time that took them 2 weeks (yes, that one was a "legit" accident). But then again, they did clean the inside of my car all nice and shiny...hmm...oh no, is that a bunny rabbit crossing the road?

I had a potential accident happen to me this morning on the way to work.

I was in the slow lane going the speed limit. There was someone on the exit ramp about to merge with traffic. I would have moved over, but the soccer mom to my left wouldn't let me. The person on the exit ramp started to slow down, but not enough. I had to slow down, I flashed at them to get them to merge already, but they wouldn't and kept slowing down. I had to speed up to avoid being hit in the rear. That soccer mom honked at me, but if she had let me in to begin with, it would have never happened! Jeesh people! Learn how to merge!

People don't realize you have to work together sometimes to avoid accidents. Awareness of EVERYTHING around you is part of being a good driver.

I had a cop pass me on the freeway.

I'm not comfortable with driving on the freeway, but I tend to stick in the "slow lane" and keep up with traffic when I do jump on. I was coming home from my job interview, and a cop rejoined traffic after finishing a traffic stop.

The speed limit was 65, and he was right behind me, so I had my cruise control set at 65-67. After about a mile, he jumped in the middle lane, and passed me. I thought it was funny.

On the other hand, one of the side roads I take to the 'Lounge is 35 MPH. I do
35 MPH. The New Berlin cops are assholes. Anyways, without fail, I have someone tailgating me almost everyday. They ride my ass, etc. so I scream at them and make sure to point out the speed limit signs that are posted every 5 feet. Boy do they feel salty.
                  I'm bringing disdain back...with a vengeance.

Oh, and your tool box called...you got out again.

I dont remember details, such as who this happened to, but I had heard a story once about a guy getting tailgated so he slowed down.
The guy doing the tailgating didnt like that, so he pulled out a gun and set it on his dashboard, in clear view to the drivering being TGed...
if that truely happened, talk about being a jackass.

No, I wasn't going 50 like I normally do. But honestly, what's so wrong about going 50? The speed limit's 55. That means BELOW 55, not frickin' 75 like all the other cars on the road. And I'm in a company vehicle, yo.
If you're going 50 and everyone else is going 75, you could still get ticketed, and it's a more severe charge (endangerment). A couple of drivers in Massachusetts learned that the hard way in 1997

That would only be if the speed limit was like 70 or 75. 50 in a 55 is within the limits I've ever heard of.

Out here on the east coast, due to congestion, a couple of states have passed "flow of traffic laws." Basically they allow a cop to pull you over for obstructing the flow of traffic, regardless of your actual speed. If 95% of traffic is doing 75 in a 65, and you are sitting in the center or left lane doing 55, you are creating more of a hazard than those who are speeding. The fines for getting pulled on an obstruction of traffic charge are alot worse than a 5-10 mph speeding ticket too.

This thread reminds me of the bastardmobile shortly after I got it. The main beam lever was slightly skewy and had a habit of randomly flashing people when it felt like it if the headlights were on. I got that bugger fixed as soon as I could find the time.

The only thing I (well, my DH too, as he drives 8-10 hours a day for work) ask here is please do not play the 'traffic cop'. If someone wants to go faster than you, and you have the ability to move over, please do. While that person may just be going somewhere unimportant, it may also be that they are trying to get somewhere in an emergency.

What if that person you are forcing to 'do the limit' is an ER doctor or someone who has a passenger in need of immediate medical attention?

                                Short story:
My Father-in-Law is type-1 diabetic, and one afternoon he had forgotten to take his insulin (found this out later), and went into diabetic shock while in the car. My MIL was driving and he was passenger (luckily), and recognized what was going on, and put her foot on the pedal and headed towards the nearest hospital. One problem was, someone decided they would make my MIL do the speed limit on the freeway, as well as box her in with another car beside her.

Luckily the hopsital was only another 3 miles and she knew a backroad to get around the jerk, but still.

The person behind you may have some kind of emergency that you don't know about. If they do not, and they are just speeding and being a jerk, then let the cops worry about them. It is better to put them ahead of you anyway. Any cops that are clocking drivers will see them first. It isn't up to you to enforce the speed limit. Stop worrying so much about what others are doing and just make sure you are following the rules and laws.
"We go through our careers and things happen to us. Those experiences made me what I am."-Thomas Keller
