  • If things are better in (Name your state), who's twisting your arm to stay here?

In South Florida, we have our share of troublemaking people who have literally no business living here, except to gripe and complain about everything. I've dealt with it as places of business as well as with what I do for a living, which is working in a call center.

I saw an incident at the post office a while back where this lady was upset that the cost of overnight shipping was much, much more than regular shipping. We all got to hear how much better things are in New York and how her postal service never treats her like that. The guy next to her said, "Then why don't you stay there?" Most of use could not resist the urge to chuckle.

I also remember a newspaper article that went out several years ago where this New York snowbird actually wrote in how unfair it is that the local malls and other places of business such as the eating establishments do not allow smoking inside. She went on and on about how she has to go outside in the blowing wind or in the pouring down rain for a cigarette (now, that's desperate!) instead of being allowed to do it inside the warm, comfortable atmosphere of the mall. "In New York, they don't treat me like this, but whenver I stay at my $5 million home....." Yep, she had to make sure we all knew the value of her home, and I was willing to bet she prohibits smoking inside it.

Who's making these people live here? If it's better where they reside the other half of the year, why don't they just stay there?

Um, the Postal Service is a federal entity..."her" state is going to have the same rates...

And of course overnight is going to cost a lot more than standard shipping..!

Oh, yeah, and NY has banned smoking all over the place, too, now so neener neener neener!

I've been getting this where I work now. "The shopping is so-o-o-o much better at Blah in New York!" And there's the one's that just rip the shopping in New Mexico in general. Had one "lady" say this the other day and I had to bite my tongue to not say, "No, it's not, thank the gods!"

Ya know if you hate it here so much, please to take yourself back where you came from. No, it's not New York, we do things differently here. There's a reason we call it "menana-land" (menana=tomorrow in Spanish)!

But then again, I had to move back here against my will and I'm counting down the days till I can move back to Chicago.
            Yay Chicago!! That is all.

These are the same people who would go to Italy or France and complain that they don't do things the way they do in America. Plus seeing as they moved from another state they act like that it's a big deal.

As for where I live, there's nothing and I mean nothing in Michigan and I'd really like to get away from here. I might move to a different state or to Canada after I finish school. In a dream world I'd be living in France or Japan.

Japan really is a nice place, but I recommend trying to get housing in Okinawa if you're not familiar with the language or culture. I lived there for three or four years and it was a very nice introduction. If you're not prepared, Japan can be shocking for the unwary American born/bred...assuming you're american born, of course.

As for the whole 'my state is better than your state, nah nah nah' argument...at least it's better than here in Florida. Here, we have people trying to MAKE our state into something it's not. Here's a newsflash folks...FLORIDA IS A FREAKING SWAMP. NOT a beach OR a golfcourse!

I had an Italian professor in college that was always doing that. We don't do that in Italy. American (fill in the blank) is so much inferior to Italian (fill in the blank). It's so backwards here. The shoes suck here (He wore the ugliest, prissyist shoes imaginable). Blah blah blah.

I got sick of it. He sure liked the American Dollar enough to stay here, didn't he?

I told him that we had one thing he might like in America. John F. Kennedy Airport. They sold one way tickets there.

We didn't care much for each other.

Bah, Benny's. Can't really expect much from them except their snobby attitudes. We really need to have a Benny Hunting Season where it's legal to shoot them.

Actually, we have both beautiful white beaches and lovely golf courses. I don't golf but I have seen them- I frequent the beaches though. Much love for my beach days.

I know. I just happen to live in the upper portion of Florida near Payne's Prairie. Florida is actually more wetland and swamp than beach and it seems to shock people.

Ahhh... I'm lucky enough to live on the Gulf coast. I frequent Clearwater area beaches. Clearwater Beach itself is too touristy though- too many people and attractions.

I had an American call me a few days ago, and he promptly started grousing about how things here aren't done the same way they're done in the states. The kicker? He's been here 16 years...If you don't like the way we do things, go back then! I don't go overseas and say "Omg, you drive on the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD!" or kvetch and moan about the culture. Sheesh!

                              iradney~

It is sad, but true, that many of my fellow countrymen/women seem to think the American way is not only the right way- but the ONLY way.

I'll use Pan's Labyrinth as an example again:
                              SC: "Why is it subtitled."
Me: "It was made in Spain."
SC: "Don't they speak English there?"
                              Me: "No."
                              SC: "They should! Why not?"
Me: "It's a foreign country... not all countries have English as the primary language."
SC: "They shouldn't make movies then!"
                              Me: *heavy sigh*

You probably won't be surprised by the fact that I've had this/similar conversations more than once.
