  • A new low in the world of sugar-free...

I'm still trying to figure this one out:

Sugar free maple and brown sugar oatmeal.

(BTW - all of the sugar "subsitiutes" out there are actually more dangerous than sugar. My wife fried my ass for buying the Smucker's sugar free syrup, she told me to look up one key ingredient, yep, it's poison).

We all thought this product was hilarious (and pathetic), too.

Splenda, most likely. I have several of these types of syrups in my fridge right now.

Possibly manitol or malitol, too, or some other sugar alchohol (which have a laxative effect, so beware.)

There's a plant-derived sweetener called Stevia that has been shown to have adverse health effects if used excessively (once or twice a day in coffee is no problem, but there's a possibility of bad things if you eat it all the time).

So it saves you a whole 20 calories over the regular glazed donut (mmmmm....donut.....). What's the point?

And I didn't know they made "brown sugar" substitutes... I'll have to look for some Brown Splenda, or Brown-n-low...

Very pathetic. At least Krispy Kreme have figured out something marketing gurus across the world have known for years:

The image of a product is more important than the reality of the product.

In small quantities, that won't be a problem or they wouldn't let them sell it. Which ingredient are you on about? I'm continentally challenged, so I can't look at a bottle myself.

I've always been fond of sodas and juices that are sweetened with apple juice, like that Izze stuff. Have you ever tried making lemonade with apple juice instead of sugar and water?

Same's true with Saccharine, Aspartame, and Sucralose....but the FDA had no trouble approving those....

The Girl Scouts have a "sugar free" cookie that contains about 5 different sugars.

My wife is very good at picking out sugars from the ingredient list, apparently there's about 100 different ingredients that are sugar in most foods.

Because they weren't lobbied against by the idustries that produce artificial sweeteners, notably Montsano, the producer of Nutrisweet, and sugar. Stevia can only be sold in the US as a "suppliment." And you can thank big industry for that. You're right, it can't be patented...and as such there are no palms to grease or monopolies to be had.

My diabetic friend LOVES her some sugar-free sugar cookies. First time I ever saw those in her dorm room I did a double-take.
