I used to get kids trying to get me to buy them packets of smokes when I was at college; I just took their money, bought a packet of fags, then waved at them saying "Thanks!" before walking off. Serves them right for trying to get someone to break the law for them, tho yes, I admit that was a bit bitchy.
    Bravo!

A kid came up to me and a friend one day when we were walking down the street and did the exact same thing! It went a little differently though.

Chav: Can I have a fag?
      Friend: No, I don't smoke.

Chav kid punched my friend in the face and ran off!

I have on the rare occasion found myself without any smokes. I would never ask for a freebie, I used to offer a quarter for a smoke, but with the way prices are going I am now up to 50 cents, and it has only happened maybe twice where I was that desperate. I walk by a school bus stop in the AM on my way to work and the kids are constantly trying to bum a smoke then when you say no, try to offer you money, they will follow for blocks harassing you. I hate it!
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

People ask me for cigarettes and I've never smoked in my life. I guess they're desperate? When I was little I went to visit this aunt who was a totally heavy smoker, I think she smoked cigars (She died of lung cancer later). Her whole house stunk so much I had to constantly run to the bathroom which was the only room that smelled nice. Since then I've always been turned off by the smell.

One time in college, many, many years ago, the guy next door to my room in the dorms came and asked me for a few bucks. As I'm pulling out my wallet, asked him what it was for, and he tells me a pack of smokes. I said no, I wasn't supporting his bad habit. Long story short, he spends the next 5 minutes following me around begging for money, and even changed his story, saying he was going to buy a slice of pizza instead.

I've been asked to buy ciggs by people at work, I only buy them if I like the person because around here they actually bust people on buying for underagers.
Having never smoked before they had to train me on brands, 100s, menthol etc.
"C'mon Chelsie. You want Newport 100s. Just repeat after me: 'Newport 100s.'"

I do have an ex who buys one of every brand of ciggs just so he can chat up girls when they ask for a smoke. Funny thing is, all he seems to catch is jailbait...

If you want a funny smoke bumming story, once a friend of my ex-best friend was pestering him for a smoke (we were in school then I smoked too, from 16 years old until I was 23.) , anyhow the guy begged and begged and begged while my ex-best friend constantly said no, and no and no (my ex-best friend has the personality of Ren Hoek mixed the Bob The Angry Flower), at least he breaks and says

"Here leave me alone now" and gives him a cigarrette... the other guy smiles, takes out a pack of cigars that was missing a single one and says "cool, now I can complete my box again.." and shoves it in.... he was lucky he was faster running than my ex-best friend or I'm sure he'd be dead now.

What a coincidence, I talk about smokes, about bob the angry flower, and I find this one: http://www.angryflower.com/bybidi.html

                  Two things:

                  1) The only situation in which I will ask a stranger for a cig is if I am at the bar, have been drinking, and am either completely out and desperate, or trying to flirt with a smoker. I have no problem asking friends and coworkers, as they know I will always let them have a smoke if they're in need.

                  2) I am crazy generous with cigs, but I only give them to people I know-coworkers, friends, etc. I even give to my non-smoker friends who want one when they're drunk, in spite of the fact that they'll never "be able" to hit me back. But if I do not know you from Adam, chances are, no, you cannot have one of my cigs. Especially if you look much to young to be smoking.

On a side note, I was at Warped Tour last weekend. Given the bands playing, it was full of teh emo and wannabe metal-heads, and I saw SO many kids who looked all of 14 with cigs in hand/mouth. I'm not trying to be hypocritical, as I smoke, but at least wait until you're legal to buy the cigs!

See, I don't understand this mentality. I'm not trying to judge ya'all, I'm just trying to understand, so don't get mad at me for asking. But why would you start a habit that makes you jones so bad you'd root through trash and beg from strangers off the street? I've seen a friend piece together butts with pins and smoke them. I don't even want to touch them, here she's got them in her mouth. Seems crazy to me.

I've never smoked never really understood. this. My Grandfather started smoking in the army (dead now, emphesyma), and at his age, I understand. Those were different times. But now we all know how nearly unbreakable the addiction is, so what makes people start?

I don't know anyone who started smoking as an adult. I was 15 when I started.

How were your long-term decision making skills as a teenager?

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

I guess that's what gets me...everyone starting now seems to be so young, so I gotta think they know how hard it's going to be to stop.

I can't really relate. I never wanted to smoke, and I was never pressured to smoke by anyone. So it's not something I have any insight on at all.

Long term decision making skills? I guess no better or worse than anyone else's. I did see people smoking and think "yuk, that's not for me." That was no acting with the big picture in mind, I just didn't want to do it. That, and I saw adults trying and failing to quit, so knew I didn't want to get involved in something I couldn't stop if I wanted to.

Like I said, I'm not trying to judge anyone. I'm trying to understand what pushes people to start and keep at it till they were hooked. I had several friends say that when they started, it tasted terrible, but when I asked why they continued, they couldn't really answer. It was like they WANTED to smoke, whether they enjoyed it or not. I didn't get it, and I still don't.

I started smoking at college, but I'm not hooked. Before everyone can jump in saying "You're just in denial!", no, I am not. I have stopped smoking for long periods of time in the past out of choice, like if I was on holiday with nonsmokers or just not able to afford smokes. I don't smoke that much in any case, but I like smoking. It relaxes me, and makes me feel good.

My first ciggie was good, and so was the last one I smoked, ie last Sunday. My theory is that some people have an addictive personality, and some people don't. I'm one of the second group; I'm not hooked on anything. It's a fact that everyone has an antisocial habit that makes them feel good, so I'll enjoy my smokes and try to be as considerate to other people as they are to me.

Being considerate does not mean coming up to me in the streets and trying to bum ciggies off me; nor does it mean holding your nose or fake coughing if you walk past me in the street; especially since that bus backfiring next to us is probably giving you worse health problems than the little wisp of smoke from me ever could. Will stop this now as it's starting to get ranty and offtopic. XD

                                I agree.

Yes, I'm causing myself great harm by smoking. Yes, I've tried to quit, more times than I can count. (And just about EVERYTHING causes cancer, with the possible exception of books. And that might be the next thing.)

I try not to smoke near non-smokers, but if someone fake coughs while I'm smoking--hey, you just asked for me to have ANOTHER one. Yaaaaaaaaay.

                                And here ends my mini-rant.
