I've flown a fair number of times in my life, so I pretty much know what to expect when going through security and getting on an airplane.

My boyfriend's dad, however, hadn't been on a plain in about 30 years. He really didn't know what to pack what he couldn't bring on the plane in his carry on. So I sat down with him one night after dinner, had him lay everything out that he was planning on bringing. Then we went though and I told him what he could bring in his carry on and what he should pack in his suitcase. Because of this, he had absolutely no problem getting through security and his trip was a breeze.

My boyfriend, on the other hand, had never been on an airplane prior to our trip to Colorado to attend my cousin's wedding earlier this month. He's a light packer, so he went through security with no problem either. Traveling with my 86 year old grandmother, however, was the biggest challenge. Basically she's had 2 knee replacements, which always set off the metal detector when she goes through them. She also can't bend over to take off her shoes. Going on this trip, I had to send my carry on stuff with my boyfriend and my dad so I could stay behind while my grandmother went through extra security.

My advice when traveling on a plane: if you don't think you can bring it on, leave it home or pack it in your suitcase.
Suddenly, Vermont became the epicenter of the dystopia.

I'm almost afraid of my trip to Heathrow in November, because I'm told they're very strict, but I'm a good girl, and I do my research before I leave, so I'm not too worried.
Flying through Heathrow is pretty easy. Don't get too worried about it. Just make sure that you only have 1 piece of handluggage, or if you take a handbag and another bag make sure that you can put the handbag into your other bag. The only other thing is that you have to have liquids in the 100mL containers, in plastic zip lock bags. I think that's all you have to know.

Thanks! That's pretty much all I have to do to fly into Chicago too, so I won't worry. I even have a stash of the ziploc bags they use from my last several trips, and I bought reusable 3-oz plastic bottles to put my shampoo and stuff in I usually only bring my backpack on the plane with me (which has my purse, knitting, book and sometimes portable CD player in it).

To be honest, I much prefer flying and doing customs at the airport than driving through a border crossing. But that's because all the ones between Canada and the US around here are on bridges, and I hate being stopped on a bridge.

The only thing that pissed me off flying through Chicago is that the planes there NEVER seem to take off on time!

Having a fiance in Mississippi, a father in California and myself in Canada, I've done lots of cross-border travel in the past two years. I always pack super light (usually just clothes, a stick of deodorant, NO razors of any kind [I buy some disposables after I land], my Ipod, my Nintendo DS, my cell phone and my digital camera), makes getting through security a breeze.

Also I pack light enough that I can fit everything in a single carry on bag.

So lovely to not have to wait for my luggage after getting off the plane.

Except I was the lucky winner of a TSA patdown on the final leg of our trip back home.

I like to pack what I call "Washing Machine in a Can". It goes under the brand name deodorant!

Same for me, each time I've flown out of Newark. :sigh:
