An Amish-raised friend told me, if I'm remembering what he said correctly, that part of their traditions include taking their older children out to give them some exposure to the way the outside world works. Basically, they let their kids make an informed decision on whether they want to stay on the farm or to venture forth and take part in modern society.
OK...now you've done it...you've reminded me of this joke:
An Amish lady is trotting down the road in her horse and buggy when she is pulled over by a cop.
"Ma'am, I'm not going to ticket you, but I do have to issue you a warning. You have a broken reflector on your buggy."
"Oh, I'll let my husband, Jacob, know as soon as I get home."
"That's fine. Another thing, ma'am. I don't like the way that one rein loops across the horse's back and around his balls. I consider that animal abuse. That's cruelty to animals. Have your husband take care of that right away!"
Later that day, the lady is home telling her husband about her encounter with the cop. "Well, dear, what exactly did he say?"
He said the reflector is broken.
I can fix that in two minutes. What else?
I'm not sure, Jacob ... something about the emergency brake...
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.
Forsooth woman! I was merely giving thine IPF advice on his unconventional manner of dress! No offence be intended, and peace on both your houses!
Forsooth? I think that's Shakespeare, not Amish...
I went to college out in Lancaster County, PA. They have an a capella group that does a big spring concert every year, and my senior year they recorded it and sold CDs. They did Weird Al's Amish Paradise...I have their version on my iPod
I don't go in for ancient wisdom I don't believe just 'cause ideas are tenacious It means that they're worthy - Tim Minchin, "White Wine in the Sun"

Hey, cut me some slack. My only exposure to the Amish is Weird Al's song, and bad Hollywood portrayls. Now, I've a bit more experience with Hutterites.
For some reason, when I read the title, I had this image of a couple of Amish folk in a horse-drawn buggy playing chicken with each other, or flashing their lanterns LOL
I own a Grand Theft Amish T-shirt (below, it reads Penn State Dutch). It has two Amish buggies barreling along at high speed as the drivers flick whips at each other.
It's now a discontinued line - I treasure it.

You raised my hopes, then dashed them. All in the same post.
