So in truth..we are not compligning about SUV's but the idiots that are driving them, that try to drive them like a car. In short..you can't. Just because you have 4 wheel drive, Anti-lock breaks, and an electric ass wiper, doesn't mean that you can break the laws of physics..

IMHO: I always thought SUV showed lack of commitment. It says to me "I want to buy a pick-up truck, but I don't want to commit to owning one"

Personally, I'll keep buying my pick-ups. Nice to be able to haul something when you need to.

ah yes but some if not most states blame the driver who didnt check their blind spot and seeing as she had already merged over, she was kind of in her blind spot, though i doubt that i bet she saw her in the mirrors, and it would have been her fault.

Of course some of us have a car as a work vehicle...and another car as the nice vehicle But, if I had to get an SUV of some sort...I'd get an old Land Rover, or an IH Scout. Both of those are usually cheap over here, and are sometimes nearly given away. Easy to run, tough as nails...plus they're classics

My b/f is the opposite . . . he has an old beater truck he drives back and forth to work, and another nicer truck that he'll drive either when we're going out somewhere special or the Brown Bomber (as he refers to the everyday truck) breaks down.

The nicer one (the Chevy Avalanche) is usually the one out on loan on weekends. Either his older son wants to borrow it to go cruising with a couple of girlfriends, or his BIL will want to borrow it on occasion . . . . it gets around.

Maybe I need to suggest he start charging them to borrow it. Say $50 or so for a half day . . .but then that'd barely cover a tank of gas for that monster.

Yes! Someone else who gets the value of the pickup truck! I drive a Chevy Silverado. Happy with it, too. Does the job, does it well. My only complaint is it's not 4 wheel drive, which makes snow a bit difficult to deal with. Yes, I use sand, but I still get spins when starting on snow.

Anyway, back to everybody else. I just had to toss in an added vote for the pickup truck. Especially with a truck cap. Very nice setup.

When I briefly owned a Jimmy, I was told by my insurance agent that it costs more to cover SUVs/large trucks because they'll do more damage if you hit someone else. What would have been a fender bender in a car on car encounter ends up with tires on the other guy's windshield.

My ex drives a truck, but it's a small Toyota pickup; smaller than most SUVs, probably. Though he needs a new car and is looking at another small SUV.

And the last idiot I encountered on the road was in a Hyundai Sonata (amusingly, the same car and color that my mother has). I was stopped at a light and the car in front of me inched up a bit as impatient people at red lights do, and I was fixing my hair (and did I mention the light was red?) so I didn't move, and this car comes out of nowhere, having pulled onto the yellow lines that lead up to the turn lane and then started to pull in front of me, where he had to wait for the light to change to get all the way in, anyway. The guy in the passenger seat looked back at me as if he was confused as to why I was looking at them all ?

I have friends who drive cars or trucks, they never see the need for SUVs.

And the last idiot I dealt with? I was a passenger. A friend of mine had to go to a grocery store and she didn't know the area well. She offered to drive and lo and behold I'm freaking out. Apparently her dad was a race car driver back in his day. Speeding and tight turns at 60. Yeesh.

Which is what happened in the OP. And I have been in an accident where I was cut off and hit the person in front of me, and the cop who reported to the scene AND my insurance company determined it was the other driver's fault, even though I technically hit him, since he cut me off in adverse weather conditions and did not give me enough time to stop. I was already in the turn lane, braking with a blinker on, when he cut over going slower than I was (he was ahead of me, just made the decision to turn when the light changed and he realized he was going to have to wait anyways) and I couldn't stop.

If you've had an accident where the bumper has been hit by at least 5 miles per hour, you probably need to have the bumper replaced. Or, more accurately, the shock absorbers that are in the bumper assembly. They're pretty much a one-use thing, but most people have no idea about them.

It's been nailed a few times, but always in parking lots, never when the car was in motion, and always at very slow speeds. Once it was an SUV that hit it at the right angle to smash my tail light, but the bumper was fine--and it has been checked out. It was dinged again recently by an acquaintance in a bar parking lot.

I've had people pull this stunt on me in CT a lot. I'll be waiting in line at a light to go straight through, and some yahoo will pull into the turn lane to my left, then try to pull in front of me despite the light still being red. And there being maybe a bumper's worth of space between me and the car in front of me. And the driver of the car trying to pull in will be glaring at me like I'd better not just pull through and keep him from getting in front of me, despite the fact that he can't get in front of me the way he's pointed. I have to wonder why these people think they're so special that they can cut in line at a red light rather than waiting behind another four cars. They're not going to get anywhere any faster!

It's actually 3 seconds, now. And you can get ticketed (at least in California) if you're not at least 3 seconds back. Which is a complete joke, because if you're even 2 seconds, you're going to be cut in front of constantly.

Well, in that case, it becomes an issue of a person merging vs a person already in the lane. The merger is automatically assumed at fault.

I had a friend who got bit by this one, once. He was turning out of a gas station driveway, to the right, which would have taken him across the intersection, because nearly all gas stations are on corners. A guy who had been traveling in the same direction he was going to be going was in the left-most lane. There were three lanes. As my friend was turning out of the driveway, the asshat in the left lane realized he had to turn right at the corner, so he drifts two lanes over and right into my friend's car.

The police and insurance company deemed it my friend's fault because he was merging onto the street and the asshat was already there. So, if you're turning onto a street from a driveway, be sure to watch all people coming up behind, because if they manage to hit you, you'll probably be found at fault.

Of course, then there's the time my mom was turning off a side street only to be hit nearly head on by a drunken judge who was driving on the wrong side of the street. And the cops tried to claim she was at fault. And, get this, when she got to court, that judge was on the bench! And, yes, they found her at fault even though she was hit by someone who was drunk and driving on the wrong side of the road.
