  • Lady, it's a convenience store not a high-end shop

The closest convenience store to my house is five doors down on a residential street.
It's actually a house wherein the lower level has been converted into a store, but whatever.
Since it's on a residential street t never gets super busy. I've never seen a line more than two people deep and I've been going there for more than 10 years.

Anyway, since it's never busy the new owner was watching a movie behind the counter between customers, which to me is perfectly fine. I mean, what else is there to do, right?

It should also be noted that the new owner (who is very nice and friendly) doesn't speak English very well, and as a result doesn't say hello when people enter, but rather he nods and smiles in their direction.
    But hey, whatever works.

I'm in there perusing the drinks when I hear a woman who just walked in mutter to herself, "Fucking ignorant *racial slur for Asians* can't even say hello to customers."
She continued muttering to herself about how he was watching his, "fucking *racial slur for Asians* movies when he should be working."

LADY! You're in a small, family-run convenience store on a residential street, not Holt Renfrew. Relax!
It's not as though he was rude, and he even paused the movie while serving both me and her (she got to the cash a moment before me).

Not only was she snottily complaining about his apparent abhorrent behaviour, she was a right bitch to him once she reached the cash.

Honestly now, is it SO annoying that someone who gets so few customers entertain themselves during open hours?
He politely mutes his movies and does the best he can with his limited English to be friendly and helpful.
I just wanted to stop her on the way out and say, "You know, if it's such a big deal why don't you walk three blocks to the main road and go to one of the convenience stores that's run by assholes."

Honestly, I'd RATHER go to those places, but around here they're disappearing in favor of bright, shiny convenience stores that are able to stock everything under the sun and then some. I know because I WORK for one of those Bright-n-Shiny chains, and they're getting so much business they're able to buy out the independents and small chains at an alarming rate.

Unless she's his boss, what the hell does she care what he does with his downtime at work? Hell, I'd probably ask if he was watching anything good!

You see that kind of think in small family run businesses everywhere. That's part of the perks for not being a big chain. That guy is probably there from open to close every or nearly every day so it's his home-away-from-home.

          Shut up lady!

Maybe it's just me, but I would have called her on her rudeness and ignorance. I can NOT abid that kind of behavior without saying something.

The racist bitch was looking to complain about something the second she saw he was Asian. He could have rolled out a red carpet at her feet and she still would have complained.

And as far as I'm concerned, if you have your own business, you can do pretty much whatever you want to do. Convenience store owners often work 16-18 hour days, seven days a week.

I wouldn't care if Joe (my friendly corner store proprietor) was sleeping in a hammock when I walked in.

If I walked in and saw him in a hammock I'd make the one minute trip back to my house to get a resume.

That's why I'd rather work for myself Dad had his own advertising agency, and it wasn't unusual to find me building models, or working on my stamp collection when I'd be there giving him a hand. I remember one time, I was pretty sick, and couldn't be left alone...so I got to sleep on the couch. Bet that would have gone over well with some clients

You got that right. I bring my computer plus have the tv on. But a lot of people don't get how hard it is to be there all damn day long. I've fielded comments on what a "cushy" job I have. I'd like to see them deal with delivery day and being the only one there to put it all up, or a snow storm at 1am with chains required and working the only open place that sells them for 30 miles. I'd have given her an earfull.

Back when we had an employee, she would do some full days and brought her sewing machine with her.

Been there myself - did it for a decade, and I got some classic tales out of it. All year round, all weathers - stuck in the snow on the motorway trying to get home. Working thirty-six hours at a go to get the work done for christmas.

Funnily enough, when I had to work seventy hours a week, I had more time to myself.

There is a small family run convenience store right beside my buillding. There is a large Mac's a block away. I go to the small one every time. I love the family that owns it. It's mostly run by the mom and dad of the family, but the two sons help out after schools and on weekends. They are some of the nicest people I have ever met, and I would much rather my dollar go to support them than a corporation.

They happen to have a small, but kick ass section of Korean foods, and have patiently explained what each thing is to me, and how to prepare it, so I have been able to try some things I might otherwise not have. And it's all way better than the vacuum packed processed sandwiches I could get at Mac's.

You too? I find myself strangely unable to complete daily functions now that I have a nice 40 hour a week job. I saw friends more and had less problems when I worked like crazy.
