How about the women that critisize their BF/SO/ whatever, for what they wear. And then have the nerve, to ask how they look?

"You're asking me, how you look in that. Yet I apparently cannot dress myself."

Why can't it just be simple like the way men's jeans are sized? [circumference of waist] x [length of jeans] (in inches in the case of the US). Simple enough. Why can't dress sizes work the same way?
Because then no women could ever be a size 0!!!! Even the worst of the anorexics would still have to have a 1 or 2 inch waist just to accomodate their spine. Then we would have isses of plastic surgeons doing things like shaving vertebrae so that these women can make it into half inch sizes. Things would just snowball out of control because YOU MUST WEAR A 0!!!!!!

Before I found my new favorite catalog ever, I would frequently buy mens jeans, and it is 10000 times easier to find your size, and know it will fit without having to try them on. Not that women's number sizes mean anything anyway. The more money you are willing to spend on clothing, the smaller size you will wear. If I wanted to go to one of the designer boutiques in town I will wear a size 8, if I go to Macy's or Nordstroms it's a 10, if I go to Kohls it's a 12 or 14 depending on which department I am in. Misses I am a 14, but women's I am a 12.

I am 6' tall, weigh approx 200 lbs (probably more now since I quit smoking 10 weeks ago) According to the BMI that I just had to do for my insurance, I am 55 lbs overweight. Neither me or my fiance can see where I could possibly lose 55 lbs. I could see being able to lose 20-25, but not 55. I'm currenly a 36/30/39 which really isn't bad measurments wise.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

I kill the BMI with every evil form of killing that film, book, music and anime can come up with.

I am happy with my curves, and I refuse to lose a few pounds just to make BMIdiot happy.

You can still have body image issues when your skinny, if your type of skinny doesn't fit into the accepted type of skinny. I am skinny, but carry my fat on my hips. This is apparently not Ok any more, and I can't find a single pair of jeans to fit. I may be a uk size 6-8, but my hips and arse are round, and my waist is small, and I am not straight up and down, and clothes never fit properly, and I feel short and a little dumpy in comparison to a lot of people.

But I find if you say that bigger people go 'Oh, what do YOU know' as if someone who's smaller can't have the faulty brain wiring and feelings of inadequacy that do that. I don't have those issues so much any more, but I used to really badly. And if I complain about the metabolism that means I lose weight really fast- that is actually quite dangerous if I get ill- I get 'Oh, I wish I had that problem'. No, you don't, cause last time I had a stomach bug I lost nearly a stone in three weeks and I was so thin I looked like a skeleton.

I am fed up, full stop of the bloody emphasis on size, everywhere. If you live healthily, your body will stabilise at a weight that is healthy for it, leave it at that. That weight may be bigger or smaller than someone else.

And when did it become that size indicated your personality? Thin people are often seen as boring or vain, fat people as lazy and undiscipline. For f*cks sake.

Its a sensible way to desribe the size, but they still don't make them to fit me. 32" waist, 28" inside leg.

Something similar happened at the mall a few weeks ago.

I was browsing for the winter coat I needed, and a girl was trying on one of the same type of coats I was trying on. There were several mirrors so I was standing next to her. This girl had to have been as tall as the guy she was with, practically 6 feet tall (she's the perfect example of today's models) and probably no heavier than me (125-130 lbs). I mean, this girl was a walking skeleton. And she was whining about not fitting into a small because she was FAT. She was whining to her boyfriend that she was SOOO fat. Um, no, more like because you have a LONG torso that a small cannot cover.

I had to buy a large because of my damn boobs and the fact that even though the large was too long, the small and medium wouldn't zip past my breasts without my losing lung capacity. I told my boyfriend "Geez...I gotta buy a large. I guess I'm fat like she is huh!!" (sarcastically of course). Supermodel gave me a Look. She had it coming.

I shouldn't have used BMI because it's all BS, and doesn't take skeletal structure into account. However, I used it inreference to my weight-to-height ratio... so I hope I didn't make anybody confuzzled.

Size isn't indicitave of your personality at all, but the way people carry themselves. I've met some mean arse fat people and some rude arse skinny people, blah blah sterotype blah, but still. If a fat person carries themselves as being skinny (Ie wearing many sizes too small) it's odd and if a skinny person carries themselves as being fat (ie pinching at skin and calling it belly fat) it's also annoying. So let's just have a happy middle, live healthy, and stfu

Damn Skippy. According to my BMI, I'm well over 200lbs overweight, more than 2x. If you look at a much more accurate formula created to determine "Competition Weight" for boxers, MMA fighters, and other athletes, I'm aproximately 100lbs off the mark. Part of it is the better calibration for my frame and the other part is accounting for the higher level of muscle-mass I'll be carrying.

The fact that these semi-arbitrary standards of "beauty" all fail to account for non-average body types (long legs/arms, broad shoulders, large bust, etc) just shows how completely stupid they are. Anyone can look beautiful if they accept themselves for who they are, carry themselves with happiness and confidence, and just accent what's there properly.

The problem with the fashion and clothing industry is that the models who wear these clothes are rails. Just about the other 98% of women out there are not built like that and you've sadly got women trying to be like those models. The industry needs to take into account the fact that not all women are built like a rail thin model that could snap in half.

Actually, I remember hearing once it was less than 0.5% of women with the physical characteristics traditionally looked for in models. They might have loosened up in recent years, but that still goes to show the unreal expectations that fashion industries try to create.

In BMI terms 19.4 is perfectly healthy. The BMI scale says between 18 and 24 is a healthy weight range.

It's not perfect, but it is a useful basis for health professionals, however it's not meant to be used alone. A health professional is supposed to use the BMI scale to give themselves a rough idea, then base the rest on their observation of the person. So, my boyfriend according to the BMI scale is overweight, at a BMI of 26, but a doctor looking at him would see he only has a few pounds of spare flesh, and the BMI isn't taking into account his muscle developement. My BMI is 19, a little on the low end, but a doctor can see that my bone structure is small, so I am going to be comparitively lighter than someone else.

The problem comes when lazy halth care proffessionals use it as the only measure of someones health.
