  • Rome, Italy not Rome, Texas

This was related to me by a family friend who went on a tour of Europe. In a cafe in Italy she saw a lound and agressive Texan tourist, who was shouting something like this:

"What the f*** is this? A f***ing glass of milk? I order a latte and you give me f***ing milk?"

He got exactly what he asked for - latte is Italian for milk. What he really wanted was a caffe latte.

What could have been an amusing little story about language barriers turned into something nasty because of his bad attitude.

    What a shame.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

I'm sure it didn't help the man that when he goes into his local coffee seller, all he has to do is say "latte" to get a "caffe latte".

I once ordered pepperoni pizza in Italy. Oh man, it was the best. There if you want pepperoni you order salami. I knew this, though.

"Ma'am this isn't what you want..."

Oh yes it is. yes it is I want pepperoni.

"okay... I'm just saying it's not the same as in the USA..."

I know.. It's something better. Far far better.

Nice to know original chap researched the countries local customs and had a vague idea of what it was like before he went there [/sarcasm]

Isn't pepperoni a kind of salami?

That's what Pezzle's saying. In order to get the kind of pizza we think of as pepperoni here, you have to order a salami pizza there.

Since in Italy they use pepperoni to reffer to certain types of peppers.

                        Wait.. what?

If you order a pepperoni pizza in US you'll get a salami pizza?

Why doesn't that make any sense to me?

Ah, so, Wikipedia in all it's glory showed me new wisdom...

Strange, never thought that there would be such a huge difference.

Try explaining the difference between "Canadian bacon" and "ham".

Canadian Bacon is a movie, hams are the people in it.

I was about to say, "What'd Rick Moranis ever do to you?" then realized I was thinking of Strange Brew. Still Canadian, still hams. Not the same, though.
