  • Geek Squad Idiocy

Ok about 2 years ago I bought a Sony Vaio notebook from Best Buy and I paid for a 3 year complete coverage warranty. About a month ago, at work I managed to spill water on the keyboard and it was obviously fried. So I take it into Geek Squad and they send it off to be repaired. Oh but first they tried to back up my data for only $99, and I declined.

Couple weeks later we get a message from Geek Squad, but I can barely understand it so I call the store for an update. I give them my info, then ask what hardware needed to be replaced. Geek Squad chick says motherboard, keyboard, hard drive and D/C jack. She then asks if I'd like to buy an ADR plan (advanced diagnostics and repairs) for $200. I ask her what it is and she says they'll install an anti-virus and anti-spyware program. I tell her no thanks.

She then asks if I'd like my Operating System and programs that came standard on my computer for $135. I tell her to hold up, Sony puts all that stuff on a separate partition so you don't have to keep track of CDs. She informs me that Sony doesn't do that and I'm expected to pay $135 for the Operating System and standard programs, that came on the computer when I bought it new from their store.

Then she tries to placate me by saying actually your warranty will cover $35 of this so it's really only $95. I pull out all my warranty info, and all the info that I had to sign when I dropped the computer off for repairs, and it says nothing about any of this. I inform Geek Squad chick, who has no answer to that but offers to let me speak to a Manager.

I relay the whole story to the Manger, who looks up my file and says the hard drive was never replaced and he has no idea how Geek Squad managed to come up with that story.

I went in the next day to pick up my laptop and sure enough they tried to sell me the damn ADR plan again, and again I told them no.

So fast forward about a month and I managed to dump an entire bottle of pop on my keyboard (yeah I'm a klutz, that's why I have the warranty) and Sony offered to replace the laptop with one of similar value so I got a new free laptop, paid for another 3 year warranty and best of all the sales guy told me there's a note in my file saying I'm not receptive to upselling attempts.

See, you're the reason that full warranties exist, and the reason stores hate them Seriously though, nice on getting a new laptop as a replacement, and you're lucky they put a note in your account. The trick now will be making sure they read it

I told the sales guy he would regret ever offering me a full warranty. In the 2 years I had it, here's what's managed to happen.

My adorable puppies chewed off several keys
Same puppies chewed through the A/C Adapter while plugged in.
My ex dropped a phone on the keyboard, snapped off several keys
Dumped a bottle of water on keyboard
Dumped a bottle of pop on keyboard.

Thank god the warranty was only $300 but I swear the employees roll their eyes every time I walk in the store.

I liked the extended service contract at Best Buy before they started to get "cheap" with how they replaced things. My dad bought me a cell phone at Best Buy in 1999. He decided to get it there because of their replacement plan. He got me one of those Nokia phones that everybody and their grandmother had and were also known for having battery problems. Well, with the plan at the time all I had to do was bring the phone in to any location, tell them the name on the phone, and they would replace the battery with no questions asked. Let's just say that I took advantage of this several times.

Then they changed the program so that your product had to fail x number of times before they'd offer a replacement. That's when I bought my first laptop on my own for college. My dad and I went in, he signed for the credit card so I could buy it and we would have a year to pay on it interest free. Worked out great... until the keyboard started to fail. The keyboard failed FIVE TIMES before they would finally replace the entire computer. I was in Florida when I got the call that the computer was eligible for replacement and I had to go right in and pick up a new one. That was really great considering I was in FLORIDA on vacation and the computer was in NEW HAMPSHIRE!!! I asked if my dad could go in and pick it up and they said sure (I just gave his name and told them that he'd be in at x time to pick out a new unit). My dad goes in with his girlfriend at the time and they let him get the most expensive laptop on the shelf (wow!). It was just irritating that I had to give up my laptop five times during the school year so they could send it out for repair.

About a year after got the replacement computer, I went and fell in love with a Mac computer. I've had the same computer for over 2 years now and haven't had a single problem with it. I've found that the people at Best Buy don't seem to be the brightest crayons in the box when it comes to computers and I will never buy a computer there again. Heck, I don't think I've stepped foot in a Best Buy in at least three years.

And don't even get me started on their sales pitches. Just leave me alone when I'm shopping. If I need help I'll ask for it.

I walk the 5 feet and THE SAME guy walks over, "so what can i help you with", after my wtf moment it ended up he couldnt help. sold the sony for parts after more f-ups, (kept the hard drive) and bought a mac (Which i LOVE). i wont ever buy at best buy again either.

My first laptop purchased at Best Buy (as referenced in my above post) was an HP computer. It was replaced by a high end Toshiba. A week after getting the Toshiba I had to have the hard drive completely reformatted since the OS crashed. Rather than taking it back to BB for them to do it (and most likely have to send it out) I just took it to my computer guy to do it. Best $100 I ever spent. In august of 2005, about a year and 3 months after I got the Toshiba replacement I went to the Apple Store and got myself a nice 12" PowerBook. The only problem I've had with it was when the cat accidentally broke a key on it. $5 on ebay fixed that problem rather quickly. The Mac has been beaten, abused, and traveled clear across the country and it still works just like I took it out of the box over 2.5 years ago!

I loved my old Sony, minus the accidents which were all my fault it was an awesome computer, and I love the new one even more.

When I take my laptop into Best Buy they don't actually work on the laptop themselves. I tell them what's wrong, they send it to Sony, Sony sends it back to them and they make sure it's working properly before I pick it up.

Best part is, they tried to sell me the 3 year full warranty again, but I didn't have $300 lying around, and they demanded the entire amount at the point of sale. I went to Sony's website, and found out I can pay in installments, and there are other service centers that I can go to instead of Best Buy.

congratulations on getting yourlaptop fixed. i had a major problem with the geek squad myself a while back involving their stupid full coverage extended service plan and how cheap arse scum suckers they are. They refused to honor their contract and I had to get a bit bent with them and go over their head. I'd recommend not dealign with those folks again.

i have only one thing to say about geek squad... "WTF?"

I was in the store looking at their Geek-brand cat-5 cables. I'm sure the clerk didn't like hearing what I said but... it's true... all the wires were clearly visible in the RJ45 connector... and if I made a cable at work that looked anything like that...they'd make me re-do it.

i still shopped there for parts off and on but... well if you ever get to japan check out Yodobashi... just imagine best buys filled to twice what it normally is, and then make it 8 stories tall.

                    A little OT, but related:

A friend bought a Trek mountain bike. At the time, they had a full guarantee: if the frame broke, they'd replace the bike. The third time he went in for a replacement, the store just handed him his money, and asked him not to buy another Trek. He went to another store and bought a Bontrager. He's had it for years.
