Am I the only person who was taught to ask before placing your order if a $50 or $100 would be okay? I usually break it before I go to eat, but sometimes I forget that all I have is a big bill. If they can't handle it (and usually they can), I run to a bank. Not a difficult concept for the not-quite-lazy.

He then threw a fit because he got nothing but small bills and change:
People at my work throw fits if you try to give them anything bigger than a twenty when they come in to buy a loaf of bread and a candy bar with their $100. So I stopped asking if it was OK and just hand them a fifty if I have it. By the time they notice the till is usually closed and I tell them they're SOL.

I don't know, but I only ever used my fifties and hundreds on purchases that were near or over the amounts. (Like my box set of the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. *Nerds*)

I've told my story about giving an SC $49.90 in coins, but I have a slightly related story...

I won just over $1200 in the lottery. Around here any amount under $5000 can be taken as cash. It took me 5 tries to find a lottery agent that had that much cash. (following good cash handling procedures, they had to get $1000 out of the safe for me).

I took it straight to my bank, where it's sitting in a high intrest account awaiting my wedding in 2009.

For safety reasons, most places only start with $50-100, including actual coin change.
The store I work at (similar to Hallmark) opens with $300 in each till. It's mostly all change and $5's and $10's, though.

I try really hard not to give any store a hundred dollar bill. They are hard to break. I remember working in retail stores--the tills are small. Sorry, I got used to having over fifty thousand in my drawers, so sometimes I do forget. But overall, if I only have a large bill, I usually ask the cashier if they can break it, if not, I just charge it.
But to have a cow about it. That's dumb. I'd never make a scene. I'd be too embarassed.

A little off topic but I started to notice that over here ATMS machines are starting to give out hundreds instead of twenties. I just thought that was odd...

I don't understand the people that come into a store on a Sunday that opened at 11am . . .it is just after noon . . .have less than $10 in purchases and want to pay with $100. Especially when you see what they have in their wallet and their are smaller bills. It isn't the clerks fault if the till doesn't have that kind of change in it.
On the otherhand if you purchase $80 or more and want to pay with a $100 no problem most likely I have the change for that.
Another thing to think about is majority of American's still use credit, bank, debit, gift cards when making a purchase . . it can take 3 hours to get together enough cash in the drawer to break your $100. But then if you are paying with a $100 most likely your personal finance choices differ from the general public.

this happens all the tiime when I am delivering pizza. right at the start of my shift someone will pull a $50 or $100 bill on me me a $15 order. we only get a $20 bank AND our drivers are not supposed to carry around more than that any any one time. we even (most of the time) will not carrybring from the register extra $$$'s when a customer says all they have is a 50 or 100.

the reason for this is again the security of the driver. is someone KNOWS FOR A FACT the driver is carrying a LARGE AMOUNT of cash they can rob the driver very easy and the driver and the store is out a good amount of cash

I never really have any bills larger than $20's. My bank doesn't charge for ATM use, so I just keep my money in the bank until I need it, then I go to the ATM, put in however much I need, then, well, that's that. ATMs in my area always give out $20's, so I never end up with anything more than that unless I end up making change for someone else at dinner or something.

It's just such an alien concept for me that anyone would want to carry around 50's or 100's. I hate carrying around large amounts of cash on me. If I should lose it or get robbed, I don't want to lose that much. I mean, I can report the credit cards stolen with a simple phone call and dispute any charges, but that cash is just plain gone.

I dunno, maybe I'm just weird.

Disclaimer: Not picking on you in particular Em, just that I've seen lots of people say they don't understand about the $100 bill for a small purchase when they have smaller bills.

It is a classic SC move. They're using the till as a bank because they know other places will refuse to let them use the hundered. In true SC style, they are only thinking "Me Me Me" rather than, "They don't have the change for this yet, I'll ask the service desk if they can help me out."

This is the reason all stores should have a safe with change. Duh!

I usually open with about one hundred in fives and one hundred in ones in my drawer , and whenever someone pays with a twenty I give them a bunch of change in fives, and inside I secretly Then when they get pissy I calmly explain that the managers don't trust us with any amount of bills larger than fives at the beginning of the day, and empty out the larger than five bills every eight hours or so( that's all true). So I tell them if they want larger bills they can go exchange at customer service, or better yet, stop at the ATM in the store and get smaller bills next time. It's a great ATM, it functions, and it doesn't charge to take money out, it's one of those privilaged status things.

HotFoot.....some people like to waltz around with 100s and 50s because it makes them feel important, younger, older, rich, swanky, etc.

Inside we start the morning very low on cash. The owners there so if we get a $50 or $100 he will break it. But every hour we drop all $20's and above in the safe.

The outside guy starts his shift with $95 in $1's, $5's and $10's. He is to drop when he gets alot of cash on hand.

At night the inside guy drops everything but 15 $10's, $20 $5's and most of the $1's he has. The ouside guy is to keep as little cash on him as he can get away with.

We always get people wanting $5 in gas then hand the outside guy a $100 on midnight and then they complain when he has to see if the inside guy has change. If not they make the person sit and wait until they do.

One guy did it three nights in a row until the outside guy got pissed and gave him back $95 in $1's. That customer never came back again. :P

I mean come on its 3 am in the morning do you really expect the guy to have change for $100 on him!?

There for a while we had people coming in and asking me to break a $50 or $100 for them. I got tired of doing that 5 to 10 times a day so I started telling them I couldnt unless they bought something. So they started buying $0.50 gum...

BTW the local Burger King right down the street wont take a $50 or $100 no matter what time of day it is.
