  • Is this even LEGAL?????

We're coming back home through Chester last week, and I kid you not, we saw this sign:

    "Fireworks! Cigarettes! We take EBT!"

Folks, may I be struck dead if I'm making this up. Main drag through Chester, left side of the road travelling south (I'm sitting here and just asked the husband for the secondary highway number and he doesnt' know either, but hey, you know, it's Chester. )

Last time we made that trip, the husband said, "You won't believe what that sign says" and he told me and I'm going "No, you must have seen that wrong. That can't be right, I dont' think they can take EBT for that."

So this time, we're going through there again and he says to me "There! Y'see it?"

Damned if it didn't say it.

Next time I will take a picture and post it here.

    Can they even DO that????

I think it was a total mistake....not meant to be read like that. I think it just meant that that store accepts foodstamp cards for FOOD....but sells fireworks and cigarettes as well.

I mean, I would hope they wouldn't....you can't purchasen non-food items with food stamp cards.

Their business model has cigarettes and fireworks in the same place and you think they won't take EBT?

I think my cynicism is showing.
How was I supposed to know someone was slipping you Birth Control in the food I've been making for you lately?

I don't know how it works in your state, but in mine (NM) the EBT cards have a food stamp portion and a cash portion. The cash portion is intended for families to buy essential non food items: toilet paper, cleaning supplies, cooking utensils, etc.

When I worked at a convenience store I called up the government agency that oversees these things to verify what they can/can't buy. So what would usually happen is some seedy looking low-life comes in with the family EBT card, newly loaded with funds, and the usual purchase from these little bastards:

Food stamp portion: O'Douls non-alcoholic beer (legal)

Cash portion: regular beer, liquor, cigarettes, rolling papers, copper pads, and other things to use with their drugs (legal)

In the year that I was there, 2 people actually bought fresh produce. Very sad.

This was not an actual building. We are talking about those crappy little trailers with banners on them and an open side that sells fireworks when there's a market for them. Only down here, most of the fireworks kiosks sit on the same site year round.

          Rednecks LUB them some fireworks.

No, this was the sort of place that I was suprised to see that they sold anything BUT fireworks. I assure you there is no food being sold at this place.

Why would you invite people to smoke where you are sitting on enough powder to blow up half the town (in Chester's case, the ENTIRE town)? And then turn around and take EBT??? Yeah, you're right, hell of a business model.

There is so much wrong with this picture I don't even know where to start!

don't be hatin on explosives, explosives are awesome.

but beware, firecrackers scare the shit out of small children, so you probably shouldn't tie 5 of them together before you take the kids out for sparklers, no matter how funny it is
